I know this has been gone over thousands of times but thats the problem. a "egt" search gives back too many answers. Got a 96 ram 5speed 13" sbc and a bhaf. if i really pour on the coal i can peak the egt at 1400 (might have gone more but i didnt want to hold it anymore) and 28-30 psi boost. normal highway driving is around 600 - 800 egt. I read 1100 -1200 egt can be run all day long is this correct and what is the melt down point for egt? also what can be done to lwer the egt's do the 4 inch exhaust down pipes help.

Your EGT sounds about right. As far as lowering it goes, opening up the exhaust will help. A cheap mod is to just dump the catalytic converter (if yours has one) and the muffler. Install either a piece of straight pipe of a good free flowing muffler. A better way to go is get a complete 4" exhaust from turbo back.

You don't want to hold any temperatures over 1250F, the odd momentary peak above that should be OK like if you're rowing through the gears with your foot down. I'm guessing your pyro probe is in the exhaust manifold before the turbo, not in the pipe after the turbo.

cool thanks also what is the max boost i want to see from the stock turbo I know at some point all they do is blow hot air (like my wife) gee i hope she dont read this

and the egt peak is in 5th with the hammer down. Going thru the gears its not getting up over 1000 or 1100 goes thru so fast it dont have time

I think I was hitting 30-31psi when I had the same setup as you. With this setup you can figure about 10 hp for every psi boost pressure. Stock 215hp was making around 21psi, #10 310hp (I think) was making around 31psi. A nice mod for you setup will be a set of 3000RPM governor springs. Right now I'm sure at 2700RPM or a little sooner the fuel shuts down. The 3k GSK will let it pull hard right to 3000RPM, helps take the gap out between the gears as well. Reving it a little higher when pulling will also help EGTsl.

OK so I got the boost and egt questions answered. Know for a starwheel question. where i have the starwheel set it takes off like a rocket but it smokes like one too. If i turn the starwheel down the smoke is good but the acceleration is ho hum do the tst afc spring kits work or do i need to do something else. i dont mind a little smoke but right now its too heavy for my taste

The star wheel controls the spring tension on the AFC diaphragm which is what controls how much pre-boost fuel you get. From the factory it's set so it'll only deliver a set amount of fuel before your turbo spools and you get manifold pressure. Once you have pressure it pushes on the diaphragm (and spring) and then it'll deliver more fuel. By loosening the spring you allow it to get more pre-boost fuel which will spool the turbo faster and reduce the lag but you will get more smoke since you don't yet have the air to burn all this fuel. Not much you can do with this, either adjust the spring until you're happy with the smoke level vs. performance or just do what I do and get used to using the skinny peddle for smoke control.

I actually got it set where i'm happy with it now. A little more fine tuning on the new wastegate actuator and a 4" down pipe and I think I'll be good. anyone know how much of and EGT temp drop to expect with the 4" exhaust
