I had a local diesel shop install a pyrometer and boost gauges about a year ago. He installed it post turbo. I have never had it go above about 650 -700 deg. I kinda wondering if he should have installed in the exhaust manifold before the turbo? Seems kinda like the easy install spot, not having remove the turbo etc. . to tap the fitting. .

Any thoughts ??

TIA

Cheers,

Matt

Pre turbo is more accurate. With it post you MUST add 3-400 deg. to the reading. If you install it preturbo you should remove the turbo to prevent chips from damaging the wheel or just be REAL careful when drilling and taping. I used lots of heave grease on my drill bit and tap and have not had any problems in the last 20k mi.

BodyBomber,

Thanks. . That's pretty much what I figured. The more I learn here, the more I realize what a looser my local diesel/radiator shop is. .

I will plan on relocating the sensor. But, I'm not brave nor talented enough to drill and tap with the turbo installed. Looks like it will be an all day affair . . lol

Has anyone seen a dual pyrometer ?? Be kinda cool to see pre and post turbo EGT

Thanks Again,

Cheers,

Matt

I've seen a couple of guys (who?) quote both temps, as if they have both installed. There is no need, pre turbo is the only one that matters. But if you have the money it would be a good experiment to prove a point. EGT is the most expensive gauge. I'd put my money somewhere else.

I installed mine (pre turbo) with a little bit of grease on the bit and the tap, a magnet, and a lot of patience. It was really no big deal afterwards, I was more worried about it before hand.

BTW I think Westach has a dual EGT gauge. There should be a few of them around, I've seen them for twin cylinder (and triple cylinder) 2 stroke sleds and quads made by several different mfg's.

I'm not such a swift wrench either but I tapped my manifold much the way Rattlin-Ram & Bodybomber did. I did have to get a fresh 1/8 npt tap but it wasn't to hard. A few small metal fragments blowing out the exhaust aren't going to do much damage.

mount your probe on the ex. man pre turbo, mount it on the top close to the turbo on one side or the other there could be a port divider in the exhaust man. the 2001 has it but check yours,

its a easy install, you just need the right drill size and pipe tap to match the size of your probe

Many THANKS to all who've responded !! TDR is the greatest site, only improvement is if were free... lol. . It's worth twice the price. . Members are the greatest.

Being a rookie wench, You all have given me great confidence to do myself what I'd earlier paid someone to do !!!

I bit the bullet and bought a Westach dual EGT gauge. Under $200 for the whole rig direct. . probably paid too much. . oh well . Will have a Banks Dynafact EGT w/thermocouple, I'll let go cheap. About 1 yr old & less than 20k on it. If anyone's interested PM me.

Again Thanks All !!

Cheers,

Matt

Westach make a fine guage. I run them & like them a lot. I didn't know they made a dual egt unit. My combo guage is egt & boost pressure.

This is my install. It's as close to correct as I could get it based on what I have read about location and depth (rear half of manifold, 2 inches from turbo flange, probe not bottomed inside)

Hey, for anyone wondering if there is a port divider on the exhaust manifold in the '02 HO, there is! I had my buddy drill and tap mine for me since he is a machinist by trade. I figured he would do a better job. Mistake. He drilled right down the center and hit the divider and tapped the hole to big to boot. Even though the instructions clearly stated otherwise. We got it all worked out though. Everything is good now. But just goes to show, do it yourself if you want it done right. BTW, a new exhaust manifold goes for about $400. 00 from the dealership. Needless to say, I found a way to make mine work.

Hi-Temp thread Compound

Thanks again for all the tips !!

Does any one know of a hi temp thread sealer to use when installing the sensor in the manifold?

Cheers,

Matt
