I have a stock '01 ETH DEE (with triple pillar gauges-egt,boost and fuel pressure), and tow a fiver with a gross weight on state DOT scales of 19. 5 K +or-depending on load.
When pulling a grade such that for the gear I am in I can maintain speed and slightly excellerate, my EGTs will climb fairly quickly to 1000 degrees post turbo. I can bring EGTs down to about 800, by just the slightest backing off on the excellerator.
Truck runs really good and handles the load a good deal better than the '93 did (even with 1K lighter load)

Is this normal??
Whats best bet to lower EGTs in this circumstance,? Better air filter? (been going crazy considering K&N -in the air box, or cone type, or amsoil filter? and/or 4inch exhaust??

Would appreciate opinions and suggestions.

merryman- Taking the muffler out or replacing it with a strait through will help. A cone K&N will help, but add that K&N to a psychotty and it will really help. Another way is to get boost up. You can do this by adding a boost-module and elbow.

I have the 5spd with HX35 and my EGT's run about that of yours,600F empty @70mph, 800-900 w/5000LBS @70MPH. what I have done is get the psycotty air (I made my own) that will shave 150-175F off right away. the exhaust was only good for about 25-50F and I have tried several setups. strait pipe-too loud, bullet with stock tailpipe-no effect, 4" turbo back-25-50F.

about the only thing you can do is bomb and add an HX40 to get more air to it.

Jnutter, what problems are you talking about? When pulling at close to max GCVW the engine is going to work hard. When climbing a hill it will work even harder. Yes, a 1000deg reading may indicate the engines getting warm. 1250 deg is the danger zone. Thats why we install pyros in our trucks when towing! To tell us that its time to back off a little and let the EGTs drop. Merryman theres nothing wrong with your truck.

JyRO and Brolin, re-read the original post. He is post turbo with his probe, and 1000 is HOT.

My pyro is post turbo as well. As a matter of fact the pyro I have was mounted preturbo in my 99 auto. I have not seen any differences in EGTs between the 99 auto and the 01 6spd pulling the same weight. The highest EGTs Ive seen is 900degs and that was for a very short time. Merryman,I have a 5er ordered which will put us both at comparable GCVWs. I will keep you posted on what EGTs I get pulling.

His probe is post turbo which equates to at LEAST 1300 pre turbo.
I am refering to stock ETH's M/T up hill.

FWIW you should be able to hook up a load that is with in the factory spec's and go and tow with out burning up the engine. If DC wanted you to have to monitor the egt's so as not to cook the engine they would have installed a pyro and included instructions in the towing section of the owners manual!!!

I appreciate all the feedback.
Today I ordered a K&N RX4070 filter (the RE 0880 but where the small end is filter material rather than solid; also orderred the pre filter wrap.
I was just fooling around trying to research filters on the internet and found "performance International", whose add indicated that K&N filters were their primary focus. I called to ask questions and got passed off to "Bob" who turned out to be a manager and very helpfull. Took my questions that he could not answer;phoned K&N, got the answers and called me back-------also quoted a price much below what I had seen on here so ---ordered theme. I am a succer for people who act like they really want to help. If anyone is interested the # is 800-522-1672.
Now got to get my head on straight about where to go from here.
