I am going to put on my Westach Combo boost and EGT gage this weekend. I decided to go post turbo for several reasons, but that is for another post. My question is what is the base line normal temperature? I still have on my factory air cleaner but I have removed the 55 gallon drum original equipment muffler and put on a magnaflow straight through. What temperatures are you guys running without a load and within a reasonable variance of the speed limit? I know that I will have to do my own comparisons and calculations, but I did wonder what "normal" was to start with. Thanks,

I run empty all the time, and am 100% stock, but here's my observations:

At idle, it will cool to 200-250 in no time at all.

Normal around-town driving, maybe 300 or so.

Highway 60-70 on level ground, 350-400.

Highway 70 and up on level ground, EGT increases from about 400 linearly up as high as maybe 550.

Max throttle acceleration runs, the highest I have ever seen was about 750, maybe 800.

All in all, quite cool. I have an Isspro gauge with color-coding where the "danger" zones are. I've never even gotten into the yellow area (see pic).

Pre or post turbo?

JHardwick, kind of chickened out, but talked to a guy that was pretty knowledgeable about these things and he said that post turbo would work out well for me if I don't bomb the truck too much. Since I really don't plan of putting out 400 HP and 800 foot pounds, it will probably work out for me to do it post turbo. The only reason that I am putting on a EGT gage at all is that I plan on putting a rather heavy truck camper on it and travel to the mountains in the western states and I did not want to have excessive heat build up without me knowing it. . The guy that was giving me advise said that if it didn't work out, it could be re-installed pre turbo with out a problem and I assume that's true. I do appreciate your help and guidance.

Larry,

It really doesn't matter all that much pre/post turbo, once you get a baseline it is all relative.

Post turbo will do fine for you I'm sure :D

I agree. My past two trucks were post-turbo and I was very satisified. As you say, it is all relative.

Unless you have chronic "gadget" disease, like me, in which case you'll need both, even though you run empty all the time and are 100% stock.  ;)

I have an Autometer phantom series mounted post turbo, you can see the pyro location on my reader rig. At idle the lowest I see is 300 degrees, normal city driving around 350 to 450, out on the highway running 65 to 70 about 450. If I lug it at 50 up a hill full boost I can hit 700.

300 is as low as it gets, perhaps the CA equiped trucks run hotter, I never really got a good explaination from Cummins when I called to ask about the different oil change intervals. Could it be the cat or resonator that is before the muffler that is causing the higher temps?

My egt's get 250-275 at idle, and I have my probe in the manifold. If the e-brake is on, it would not get down to that temperature.

My wife can and WILL cure it if I am not careful. Dean has a term for that, I know.

I agree with Kieth 100%. I have both a pre and post turbo probe and the difference between the two sometime is much more than one would think. JMHO
