I read EGT should be under 1400 degrees, but most I think have the probe installed close to the engine, drilled into the exhaust manifold. I elected to install mine in the foreward test hole in the Pacbrake that is after the turbo. I know the temps will be lower than the manifold location, so what would be considdered a red zone ? I haven't towed yet after the EGT install, but it looks like 600-800 is the range that I see with the truck empty.

IIRC, general consensus is you'll get a reading 300-350* lower post turbo compared to pre turbo. I'm sure others will join in here.

I've read earlier reports from people with probes both before and after the turbo. Some reported that in easy driving the numbers were pretty close to each other but the harder you worked the truck, the greater the difference. 300 degrees used to be the rule of thumb in the 12 valve engines.

Cummins says to use post turbo, supposedly to prevent turbo damage if the probe breaks. My probe is post turbo, I use it to monitor cool down. I see temps similar to yours empty or towing on the level. Post turbo is fine with a stock engine. If your engine is modified you are better off pre turbo since you now have the ability to run too hot.

Me too. Post-turbo egt is almost sacrilege around here. ;)

I run this gauge, which has a nice color scale to indicate where "danger" is.

I've never seen more than about 750 F. That was at WOT up a steep hill for after about 10 seconds. Unloaded.

They say the later trucks, like my '06, run hotter. I think that's true, mine idles close to 300* (post turbo) and I try to keep it below 950 prolonged which it can easily reach towing up hills. I have Isspro gauges. If you start getting too much over 1050 post turbo, you're reaching the upper limits, IMO.
