Hey guys my dad has a 97 3500 ctd that we put a tst plate in i think it is rated at 240 horse & 600 ft lb. The install was real easy & we used the special guide that is sent along to locate the plate we also put a k&n elememt in the stock air box & a 4 inch exhaust. we also put on the boost elbow. Max boost is about 36 psi & when he pulls his 33 foot holiday rambler his egt heats up to 1500 on the hills(if he doesnt let off). There is a noticeble increase in power with these mods & the smoke is almost non existant maybe just a little puff at low boost. My question is how can he lower his egt without loosing power? & yes the turbo is a stock hx35x12. He also has a dtt trans with the 89 converter. The truck runs awesome & i hate to slide the plate back & loose power. Should we try a differant turbo, exhaust housing or what?thanks for any help. kurt.

Need to do something about that stock air box. It just wont flow enough to keep it cool. I have been running the Scotty II for nearly 2 years now with a #11 plate. It does make a difference in my EGT's. I also have a 14 cm housing on the turbo(non wastegated). With pulling 10k up 6% grades I can run 55 mph and the EGT's are about 1200*.

The above numbers(1200*) was before I did my 4" exhaust. I will eventually get my hands on Kurts new K-45 but right now when things start to warm up. . up comes the right foot. .

Advancing his timing to 15. 5 to 16 degrees BTDC will help also, plus give him a little better mileage.

Does the 14 cm housing realy help that much. Ive read somewhere thate some guys had bad luck as far as reducing egt with them. Thanks for the replies. kurt.

The 14cm housings are good up to a point and then you would need to go bigger. But you have trade offs. . with the bigger housings(16cm) you could have lag on the bottom end. . but on the top end where you are trying to reduce EGT's. . the housing works.

My setup is split... it spools real quick on the bottom end and helps with the EGT's on the top end when I am pulling our trailer.

And again it does not make any difference what turbo setup that you have... if it cant get air. . its not going to work efficient.

Wade is correct. . the BHAF is $50 or drilling the box will supply more air... but where is the air coming from. . The air that you would be getting is coming from inside the HOT engine compartment. Hot air doesnt help when you are trying to drop the EGTs.

Cooler air in makes hp and also drops your EGTs...

Rick

I got the air box swiss cheesed now:) . It seems like about 2200 rpm is when the turbo starts to back up & the egt realy start to climb. If he keeps it below this rpm he doesnt have a problem with egts. What housing do you guys recommend the 14 or 16 cm housing?. thanks kurt.

Is he ever going to go with bigger injectors and or bigger plate????

I want to try a 16 cm housing on my truck to see how it will act.

If the truck still has the "CAT" this may be your biggest problem. You will see at least 100*F drop in EGTs if the cat runs away. My truck could support 280HP all day long at 1250*F pre turbo at 2500 ft elevation. This was using a #11 plate, BHAF, stock turbo, and stock exhaust minus the cat. Testing was done on a very hot day (+35*C) using a constant load dyno. i. e. all factors were against keeping EGTs under control.

No cat the truck has a complete 4 inch aftermarket exhaust with a very free flowing muffler. Thats just the point the only mod for power this truck has is a small tst plate installed & the egt go wild after 2200 rpm. What do i do? slide the plate back & loose power if so how much should i move it. The plate is in the stock position now.

When you say "small" TST plate, is that a small number? As you are probably aware, the smaller the number, the more HP they make. If the truck is a 97 automatic, a small HP plate is a number 8, not a 6 or 5 etc. If you have a #8 plate, perhaps you should check the pyrometer - it may be reading high?!? Regards.

I worked into the EGT solution for my truck and trailer. I have a '96 3. 55 and pull a 9000 lb trailer. I can pull a 7% grade with my foot on floor at about 58 mph, OD off, 1200 degrees EGT.

Lost CA EGT intake manifold for 49 state manifold (flows better)

Went to ATS exhaust manifold (don't expect it helped EGT)

Went to 16 cm exhaust housing on turbo

Lost Cat (flows better)

Went to 3K GSK for higher revs with fuel when needed.

Went 4" exhaust system with 2 free flowing mufflers (for noise)

Went with #10 plate all the way BACK for egt reasons.

I have an manual adjuster that allows me to move the plate forward or back, all from the drivers seat. Unless I'm towing, it's moved forward. BACK for towing in hills.

By the way, I haven't touched the air intake box for noise reasons. Stock all the way

All these mods were based on recommendations from Reb. b (TDR sign-on) who is located in Riverdale, about 25 miles south of Fresno, CA. Reb did all the work over several months as he crept in on EGT. I think he did a great job and his prices were more than fair.

Hope this may be some help to you. My interest was in towing, not racing.

Thanks for all the help guys. The plate that i was talking about is rated at something like 230 or 240 horse & 600 ft lb torque sorry i dont know the # of it. I think i will slide the plate back a little & see if this helps his egts & i hope it doesnt hurt the power much. thanks guys. . kurt.

A question about the plate: Where did you get it? The reason I ask is that I've seen plates on e-bay that are advertised using TST figures but they are homemade ground stock plates. The TST plates are machined out of a block of material and they are stamped with the # that everyone refers to.

If it had screws holding two plates together (like the stock one), it's not a TST and who knows what the fueling is.

GGibson,

Can you enlighten me a little on the adjustable plate? I was thinking of something along those lines when I put in my valet switch, but I haven't figured it out, yet. If I only had a machine shop. :D

I remember a while back illflem did a mod on the air cleaner box that helped a bit.

It was something like a 3. 5" hole cut into the cowel and air cleaner box lid connected by a hose.

Cheap and it lowered his temps a bit. Might be something to look into.

I think an BHAF and bump the timing to 15. 5-16 deg should help some, and should be relativly cheap. About $125. 00 to time it, $40. 00-$50. 00 for the BHAF.

If his EGT's are only 1500 all you will need to control them is a Scotty II intake system, and retime to 16. 5 degrees.

If thinking about a HX40 compressor housing "a real improvement and easy to do" or a 16cm exhaust housing I would take the timing to 17-17. 5 degrees and that will control EGT problems.

Looks like it is the same as a valet switch, except the VS is simply on or off.

It is supposed to move your camplate back and forth so you can change your power level as you drive , as you choose . It seems they used to make an electric one also . One more gadget to play with while you are driving Oo.
