I am thinking of downsizing injectors and a friend of mine wants them, but he has an 06 with the 610 engine. Mine is the 600. Are they compatable or no? I pulled my bobcat today and my truck ran extremely hot. I had to run it in 5th the whole way(about 50 miles). In 6th, the turbo would just bark and loose pressure. In 5th I had to let of going up any kind of hill or it would hit 1500 degrees FAST. It was very hard to keep it below 1350 even on a flat run. so it looks like the injectors have to go or I gotta put some twins under the hood. I'd rather not run twins on this truck, so I guess I'm gonna go down to a smaller injector and try a bigger chip stack so I can control the fueling for heavier loads. I was very dissapointed in the SP66. I couldn't believe I was running that hot with just the injectors. Either they are a lot bigger than I thought or the turbo is definately not doing what it should.

Its amazing how hot and how fast the egt's will climb when your in the mountains! I can run 5/5 ez1 on the flats and be at about 1200 on a hard run, when I go to the hills with my cutoff at 1350 degrees I can still hit 1500+ once I lay into it on a hard climb! I was hitting 1400 stock running the same roads with a trailer behind me.

I usually tow with 90 Hp injectors + TST "twins" on timing = ~ 400-425 HP. The most I ever tow is about 8,000 to 10,000 lbs only.

When I had an SPS 66 and towed I had to either downshift to 5th and run the rpm and boost way up there to get the temps down or run in 6th at 75 mph+ to get the rpm up. If I ran in 6th on level ground towing I would have the constant black wispy stream of soot out the pipe... $$$$$$$$$. Surging was also an issue and it sucked. The highest temps I saw though were ~1350 when the turbo was "off boost".

I found with the 66 turbo it was hard to control boost past 10 psi or so. It was slow and linear to 10 psi and then WHAMMM! it just takes off, which makes for really interesting towing, but also makes the EGT drop a lot!

Empty, though, with a 66 turbo going up a hill = 1100-1150* - didn't really matter what speed either.

Putting a 66 sized turbo on immediately resulted in 2 mpg loss in mileage also.

I'm at 5,000 to 6,500 feet elevation too so that might have been part of my problems.

Then I went to a SPS 62 turbo and towing dramatically improved and boost and EGT were a lot more controllable - same TST/injector combo as above. Mileage also went up about 1 mpg.

Last week I had an opportunity to tow with the twins and they definitely have more low end response and a lot less smoke and EGT. Mileage is also up over the SPS 62. With the twins was also the first time I ever spun out in 2 gears accellerating from a stop while towing. I thought at first my clutch went out.

That's the two best reasons for going to twins. Power without having to worry about egt, and fuel mileage. Smaller more responsive turbos are better on fuel than large ones.

Mine runs hot towing, also. I just put it in tow/haul, and run the rpm's and boost up, and for the most part, EGT's will stay under 1100, unless I have to slow down. :D Haven't had a chance to test it with the new cam, though. Surging has never been an issue for me, even while towing.

Yea the egt #'s I mentioned were at full boost and 2700-2800 rpms. Thats the best I could get it to run. It still stayed at 1275-1300 on a flat run. Then if the road went uphill at all, it would hit 1500+ degrees fast. I may consider trying a set of twins I guess. I really hate to, but it looks like my only option if I wanna keep adding power. So now, Whos twins do you like? :D My set I built for my 2001 was just a stock 35 on top and HT3B/26 on bottom. But that truck started smoking bad out the vent tube after a few months of eavy towing. I plan on keeping this truck for a good while and don't wanna go through that again. I asumed I probably broke a ring on the 01. But I would wanna run this truck at less boost than I did that one. Anyway, thanks for the help.

Something doesn't sound right with your truck. I was pulling 9000-10000 lbs with mine through some of the hills in MD and WV, and the most I ever saw was 1200*. I could back out of it just a little, though, and they would drop to 1000-1100*. This was running between 60-65 up the hill in tow/haul mode, (maybe just a little faster. ) :D I could easily turn 3000-3100 rpm, and between 20-25 lbs of boost. On the flats it would drop to 700-800* and less than 10lbs of boost. I would try a set of stock injectors, before switching to twins. I know for fact the injectors are what's driving my temps up, from previous trips with the same load. I was also running with no boxes turned on.

Well, I think I found the problem. The two back brakes were locked down on my dual tandem flatbed trailer. It was dragging the tires though. I guess the bobcat sitting right on top of the axles was enough weight to make the tires turn, but thebrakes were on the whole trip. I feel really stupid now. I was wandering why that dang bobcat felt so heavy. But anyway, now that that is fixed, it pulls great again. It still gets hotter than I want it to, so twins maybe in my near future. But thank guys, for your help.

A 50 mile sled pull. :D Now, that's just funny, right there. :-laf :-laf

But it gives you an idea of what these trucks can really do. :D

yea, this truck did stand up to some high temps for long periods of time, thats for sure. As stupid as it was, I will admit to holding 1600 degrees for 4 miles. :-laf I got so tired of trying to keep the temps down, I said screw it, lets see what this thing can handle. I honestly was waiting on a valve seat to come loose or a piston to gall, but niether did. Lucky i guess. Gotta love these engines.

Makes me feel better to see im not the only one that has held stupid temps for way longer than any sane person would :-laf

If you are happy with the performance of the truck otherwise, have you considered water/meth? That Stage 3 Snow kit is supposed to work quite well.
