I'm completely stock except for gauges, I run I-5 to Seattle 4 times a year and also pull Donner. At 17,500 lbs I can easily reach 1400 degrees, and would probably go higher but using common sense I take my foot out of it and bring down the temp.

Regardless, weigh your rig and your trailer.

All I can say jeepdude, is go for it, I'll more than likely pass you with your hood up broke down, :)

If you say so... a stock truck pulling 10k over the sierras at 60mph is not abuse... if I end up broken down, it'll most likely be due to a failed POS injector, not any fault on my part. You yourself said you see 1400 which is my realistic limit as well. Point being, if it blows up while it's stock, it doesn't matter if it's running even 1600EGT... the factory pays for it! :)

1Tufdsl I hear ya. I was in the same boat for a long time. I finally just did it and I like the new found power, but in the end stock works just fine. It really does. I just have to get it back to "truly" stock.

Just get a 4" exhaust with an open muffler, and an intake, and you should be fine, maybe not but it is the cheapest way out of your problem as of now.

I've got the same size toy hauler as you and see EGTs of 1400+ on the hills out of Camp Verde too. Memorial Day weekend was my first tow up to Flagstaff with the diesel. That time, I had to back off or my EGTs were climbing past 1450. It turned out the air filter was pretty dirty and clogged with bugs after just 10,000 miles. For July 4th weekend, I'd put in a new air filter and the EGTs stayed at 1400 for the entire climb. The only mods on my truck are bigger tires, Jake brake, and guages.

I would guess that you are pulling at just the wrong speed for the gear you are in. The CTD likes the lower RPM range up to a point, or even on the medium to high side, but it depends on how hard you are pulling. The weight doesn't matter, just throtle position based on RPM v/s power output.

If I stand on my trucks at say, 1800/1900 rpm, the motor likes it just fine. However if I pull fairly hard at the same rpm, but at lower throtle position and the lower boost, it doesn't like it. If I pull the same weight, same gear and same hill at say 2300 rpm I can reduce the throtle position and maintain the same speed cuz at that rpm the boost is naturally higher and cooler. Is this clear as mud??

I'm puzzled too by my new 05 high EGT's. I can easily reach 1400 degrees without even trying and I'm running no fueling mods. My 02 with the EZ on the top setting barely gets to 1200 and thats on a 100 plus degree day pulling a full load on a long steep grade doing 60mph!!!! What gives????? Ever since installing these set of guages I have now become "A guage watcher"

Ignorance is happiness. I'm going to keep my '05 stock and not worry about it. The 600 has had some internal enhancements to deal with the added heat. I figure they have tested the engine to the weight limits published by the manufacturer. If they felt a particular power setting was injurious to the engine they would have the engine defuel.

Neither Dodge nor Cummins wants to be replacing engines. I'm going to take the position that as long as I don't alter the engine or overload the vehicle that I can pretty much drive it as I wish. I don't want to be driving the guages. If I install them they'll just cause me to worry. I didn't buy a CTD to worry.

rbattelle- I set the cruise at 60-65, might be kind of high for hills. I don't know. I would think the engine would know what gear/speed would work best.

NIaacs- I see what you are saying and have noticed something like this when towing, but this is the reason I put it on cruise. Again I figure the engine/computer would know best which gear would work better. By the way, what do you guys think the chances are that the pyro is not working properly. What temps do you see when cruising on the freeway, loaded or unloaded? Thanks for the help everyone. I'm just trying to cover all possibilities.

MCabrera, what gear/rpm is 60-65 mph. If that is 3rd you should be ok, but if that is overdrive your rpm's will be too low. Do you have a boost guage? Like I said before, max throttle=max fuel=max boost. However part throttle as in cruise=part fuel=low boost and high egt's.

I don't think your pyro is bad but it could be. The weight is not the problem, the hill is not the problem and the high outside temps are not the problem. I still think it is power output v/s road speed or gear ratio v/s rpm.

I'm with Nick.

When I installed my pyro I was surprised to see how the temperatures were affected by RPM. Just crusing around under part throttle around 1,300 RPM yielded higher EGTs than when I downshifted into 5th. At slightly higher RPMs, the EGTs dropped significantly. When towing heavy, both power and EGTs are better at 2,100 RPM than at 1,900 RPM.

Watch your EGTs. That one gage is telling you a lot about your motor's operating condition. It works well in saying when the motor is lugging and when it is running too fast/hard and past the optimum operating range.

Remember, aluminum melts.
