I just installed a set of DD1's. I noticed that my idel EGT's went up 100deg. What is the norm. I have read a few posts that say you should wait until EGT's are 350 or so before shutting down. Is this true? What is the purpose?

Thanks

Troy

I try to let my EGT's drop to at least 350-400 before shutting down. the turbo needs to cool down before shuuting down, just like on big trucks. If the turbo does not get cool down it could lead to premature failure over an extended period of time.

If I am not pulling my trailer, The turbo will usually cool down enough while pulling up towards the drive. (about 1/4mile)

Put 112,000 miles on mine is just over 12 months and no problems.

Jonz, I put a set of DD1's in for a guy recently and his EGT's at idle did not go up. He is using an SPA digital gauge, so it would be easy to spot if they went up. The only change he has noticed that might be considered bad is that there is more smoke at cold start, but that was expected and is not a big deal at all. I truly beleive DD when they claim a 50 horse gain, great injectors.

Jonz, No increase in EGTs when I went to RV injectors, it drops right to 300 soon after stopping. My probe is pre-turbo so naturally it will fall quickly, since turbo heat buildup won't register on my gauge.

How low will your EGTs fall if you let it idle 3 or 4 minutes? Does your truck smoke any more than usual, especially at startup? Does it run smooth? I'm not very familiar with the Banks systems, maybe that is contributing to your problem somehow.

The egt's will go up if idleing in gear but should drop to about 250 -300 in neutral or park. You can't cool down in gear. The turbo bearings are cooled with crank case oil. When you shut down the engine there is no longer any oil to cool the bearing and if the turbo is too hot it will cook the residual oil in the bearing and varnish or coke the bearings. This does not lead to long turbo life and contaminates the oil. Remember the Mobile-1 tv comercials where they heated oil to 400*: what a mess they had in the pan.

I noticed that at idle the EGT's drop to around 300. In gear is when I see the rise to about 600. I also noticed that my milage seems much worse after the injector install. Roughly went from 16 to about 13 according to the computer. I am going to give it a little more time and checi it manually.

Thanks

That does not seem right at all. I had my injectors installed the same time as my gauges so I cannot give you a delta, but at idle I run about 250. And the trip computer is no longer accurate after an injector install, mine says I am getting 25 mpg, when I am really getting 17.

Jonz, I agree, something is not right. When my truck was stock, at idle I saw below 250F on the pyro, mounted pre-turbo. With the stage III injectors I still idle at or below 250F. My mileage didn't change with the addition of the injectors, at least not to the tune of - 3MPG, maybe -. 5 at best.

The first poster had an Auto, I have a manual, and idle around 250 with BD brake off, and 450 with BD brake on.

Now I bet an auto would have higher EGT at idle in drive then it would in park.

I wait until I see 300 Pre Turbo before shutting down.

This can be a pain in the butt when I pull into the campground I go to in the summer. Its up a long mountain road all the way to the top. now when I drive up there on Fridays nights, and pull in around 11:00-12:00 at night, I stop at the entrance of the campground, let it cool for a minute or 2, then sneak into the campground. The Cummins seems 100x's louder that time of nite up there while waiting for the turbo to cool off!
