DD vs TST

I'm not clear from reading the thread: The DD UFM box alters timing AND pump duty cycle but the TST PM3 only alters duty cycle and not timing?

I'd appreciate a clearer explanation from anyone "in the know". I'm swaying between a DDUFM and a TST PM3 box and am looking for advantanges/disadvantages, etc.

My planned bombs are:

gauges

DD UFM or TST PM3

DDII injectors

more air in, more air out.

Thanks

Tim

IMHO the timing box doesn't help much with EGT's. Stick with your TST. It'll be fine. O. K. there might be a slight advantage with a timing box, but not enough to make squat of a difference at the power levels you need to pull that trailer like you want to. I've tested quite a few of the magic boxes out there. The DDII's, like any "big" injectors, will make the EGT problems when towing MUCH worse. With the box and smaller injectors (275's) you can adjust for the power level yout want and not be stuck with big power all the time. Your cruise control will actually work. Big injectors are great for drag racing, and sending smoke signals, too much heat for towing, unless you leave your box off or have something like an Edge EZ. Then what's the point of having a box like the TST PM3.

A open air filter will help a little, 4" exhaust will help a little, From what I've been told, a different turbo helps a little bit more than a little.

At the power levels I am at (1050 ft-lbs), I can hold the EGT at 1350 (via the TST remote preset), pull the hills at a respectable speed (only 4000lb trailer though) and watch my WATER TEMP slowly climb to the red zone. Vail pass & Eisenhauer approach anyone? I know of several people here in Colorado who are in the same situation.

Others's results may be differnt but this is the way it is at 6000-12000ft altitude.

Anyway, just my experience...

Bob, if it's not plugging into the main pump connector or into the data port, it can't change the timing. The EZ/TTPM/Comp/UFM all alter timing.

The Comp/UFM also has the ability to tune smoke with the sub-levels in each power level. You can make the UFM pull fuel away from what the injectors and pump would normally deliver with sublevels 1 & 2 of any power level. The other boxes do not have that capability. Boxes that do not adjust timing will also run more EGT for the power gain.

Good Info Sean and Keith, thanks.

Has anyone run a back-to-back comparison PM3 vs UFM over an extended period of time (say a month)?

Hi all, well the 4 inch plumbing is in. Man, on this truck it made a huge difference. Maybe other things made some difference besides the plumbing. Had the fan clutch replaced also. put a seal in the vacuum pump to stop the giant leak I had. They put all the manifold bolts back in and torqued, they were loose and one laying on the header completely backed out. aFe was plugging clear full with soot. Anyway, loaded or not, EGTs haven't been over 1,250 since. Coolant still climbs when pushed but stays in range. Now the boost doesn't go as high as before, seems like highest I've seen it lately is 25 lbs. Also, smokes alot less now than before the pipe change. Is this due to the turbo spinning up faster or ?? Anyway I happier since the latest mods and adjustments are in. Still no hauler bed or stacks. Need aux generator and heater first, soon be but deep in snow.
