My truck is basically stock except for an Amsoil air filter. I plan to start some peformance mods. (4" exaust, stage 2 injectors, Comp box, & transmission upgrades). In preparation I installed guages(EGT-Boost & Fuel Press. ) Driving the truck the way it is my EGT's are over 1100 pre turbo. Is this caused by the HY35 turbo's small housing? Should I buy an HX35, or can the exaust alone control the EGT. Is this normal? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am new to the Turbo-Diesel scene. Thanks in advance TDR

With the same setup, stock & Amsoil air filter, I could push my EGTs over 1300. This was climbing a steep Sierra grade at WOT. Normal cruzing at 70 I would only see 600 to 800.

Are you are seeing 1100 peak at full throttle? What is you boost preshure at 1100? If you are getting 18 psi boost and only hitting 1100 peak then I doubt you have a problem.

Actually no your EGT's are not out of whack being stock. My wifes 2001 auto maxes out at 1200 pre turbo, even when I dumped her hy35 and put in a stock hx35 and a K&N RE-0880. Believe it or not, changing out the turbos didn't make any difference in temps at all.

Yes the HX has a bigger housing (12cm2 vs 9cm2)... . but again... the bigger turbo did not lower the temps at all.

I would bet money that if you took out your muffler you would see better temps. The stock exhaust has wayyy to much back pressure at the turbo.

Just my $. 02

Boost is at 19-20lbs. at W. O. T. max EGT are 1100 & about 1200 climbing. I haven't towed since installing the guages, but I would imagine the temps. would be even higher. Does the HX35 offer any performance inrease over the HY? I guess I'll order the 4" exaust & take it from there.

I would not worry about those temps. I think the rule is to not exceed 1350 for more than 30 sec. I would always run out of straight road or be going over 100 mph before my 30 sec. countdown ended. :D

Temps Not Always higher towing!

Believe it or not... I have seen higher EGTs running empty versus towing. Unless their is a constriction in the air box or colapsed muffler (plugged CAT in older trucks) EGTS should NEVER get over 1300 in a stock truck. If they do... . how accurate is your pyro?

I could get 1200 out of my 96 5sp when new pulling or running empty. Turned up the power and still could only get 1200 - 1300 pulling hard. Running empty I could get to 1500 pretty easy.

The engine reacts allot different with a load on. EGTs don't just shotup with a good load.

BTW... . with a load that would hold the EGTs at 1350, you could burn a full tank of fuel hold the EGTS on 1350 the whole time and never hurt a thing.

Everything these guys have said is good.

My stock temps were higher than now...

Stock 1200 WOT on hills

EZ 1250 WOT on hills

Wastegate disabled Now bairly hit 1000 on hills wide open... . and I spend less time this way!!

If you're starting your bombing run, get the EZ then disable that wastegate!

I agree, changing the air filter and removing the muffler made very slight changes to my peak EGT. When I disabled my wastegate it made a huge difference. Now I watch the speedometer not the pyrometer.

While researching mods for my truck, I had been told to hold off on the 4" exhaust until I'm pushing more than 350 hp. The comment was that it's not necessary until that point. BUT, lopping off the stock muffler and upgrading the intake WILL net lower EGT's. Made sense to me.

I don't drive an auto truck, but I have read that the wastegate trick works wonders on the EGT's.

HTH.

What is the best method of modifying the waste gate? I've heard of people using a turnbuckle or J hook. I have the hard line. Will this hurt any thing? I plan on buying the COMP box and running it without the pump wire till I do some transmission work. The boxes block the over boost code and the defueling, correct?`

Personally I don't believe in the turnbuckle method. I have seen some instances where completely blocking off the wastegate has lead to turbo failure.

What is the easiest thing to so is look for your compressor housing. On the back of that is a bar that goes from the back of the housing to the wastegate. Turn that sucker... the longer it is the more it delays the wastegate from opening. Pending on how much power your plan on adding, you don't want to over power the turbo, so this will allow the wastegate to open up at higher boost levels.

Does this method make sense?

Sounds good to me. I thought the turnbuckle sounded a little scary. Thanks for the advice. I knew that rod was threaded for a reason.

Cummins states you can run sustained EGT at 1250*. If you go over this temp you can start to melt your pistons. I know most of the high hp guys have gone over the 1250*. Sam

It seems backwards to me... . But maybe I'm wrong... . Activation of the wastegate is accomplished by the actuator pushing on the rod to open the wastegate. The turnbuckle prevents this from occuring... So it would lead me to believe that lengthening this rod would cause the wastegate to open earlier...

My brain keeps telling me that shortening the rod will increase boost by delaying the wastegate opening... .

Someone posted a bit back on this... Ted Jeanetty maybe... . I'll start searching and see what I find.

I am starting to upgrade our 99 and hav e upgraded the transmission and converter. What method did you use to disable the wastegate and where did you find information on the possible improvements ?

Souders,

Read on here for the upgrades... and you can't disable the wastegate until you have added a boost module or it will set an overboost code on the ecm. The Power Edge EZ has both the boost module and a mild fueling box combined. It installs in about 2min. Gives the truck a real kick and is one of the best upgrades as far as what you get for what you pay.

Maybe your right... I'd have to go check my turbo. But I'm positive I was told to lengthen that bar. I'll find out then post up the results.
