A day at the RV show

Im going to pull my 4000lb TT to Alaska in a couple of months. I understand that there are a couple of 6 to 10% grades that I will have to pull. My truck is all stock, except for a Poweredge EZ box. (auto with 3:54's) I dont have any guages.

Do I need to worry about ETG's when pulling those steep grades since Im pretty much all stock ? If so, what can I do to keep the EGT's down ? Is there a preferred RPM range that helps to lower EGT's ? Im guessing that, when pulling those grades, I should keep the transmission in 2nd, or even 1st (auto transmission)

Thanks for your help,

TRat

It's always nice to have gauges since it makes problems easier to troubleshoot. However, if you run your truck stock with only a 4K trailer it shouldn't be anything to worry about. It's never that hot in the north country so you tend to run cooler. I drove to Alaska and don't remember any really bad grades. I've seen far worse driving in the Rockies.

Thanks for the info. I read about the 6 to 10% grades in the Milepost. But, I guess it isnt necessarily the final word. Ive driven over the Rockies going between Seattle and Minnesota over I-90. If the grades arnt any worse than any of that, then I feel more comfortable.

i can run my bully dog 70 hp chip on stage 3 and not have any egt issues and we have hill 6 and 8 percent around here i tow between 30,000 37,000 gvw. an transmission temp gauge would be what i would be more concerned with as i have hit 185 degrees before .

With a 4K trailer on I don't think that you or your truck will know that it is behind you at all. I would not think that you will have any kind of issues at all. :)

Well Tractorat, We were up there a couple years ago and had no problems. Towed a 10k 5th wheel. I've a #6 plate and 4" exhaust & exhaust brake. I would recommend the TST lockup swith for the Torque converter though. A lot of people like it and a lot don't as you have to remember it's locked. It will stall your engine if you come to a stop with the T/C locked up.

With the T/Q locked you have no slipage and no temperature rise of the transmission fluid due to shearing. Great for going up hills and it's a help going down even if you don't have an exhaust brake. I like it.

The site for the wiring is:

This is where the schematic is located.

I lost a stock transmission in Lilleoot BC and BD delivered one of theirs to the shop that my truck was at. Can't beat that for service.

Good luck.

triple gauge pod will only run you about 300 bucks. It's well worth it, even if you're just pulling 4k lbs ... you'll learn about your engine that way ;)
