Hey Andrew,

I run flex-a-lite electric fans on my truck. I like them so far. I have a switch, but usually run w/ them on all the time. I do this cause I will forget to cut the freakin things on and the next thing I know my temp is 195. The engine sounds BAD w/ out that dang fan in there. My timing is a little crazy, but you can really hear her roar up in the rpms. It sounds really sweet! I don't know how these fans are going to handle GA heat, but we will see. Oh I really like how much space there is b/t the radiator and the front of the engine w/o the shroud and fan. I bought my fans off ebay for $150 and they are two 12" fans.

Great post, do you have a part number for the one(s) you got? I have thought about that space also, and that HUGE fan schroud that goes with it.

The Horton is compatible...just!

Andrew, the Horton is a viable option, although pricey, but IMHO well worth it - just install and forget about it and the manual override feature is cool :p on hot days too!!

One thing with the Horton set-up... . DC screwed around with the wiring loom under the hood for the 2001 model year and the Horton fan wiring kit is 2000 model year ready, so there's a little bit of extra thought to make it work as intended. Don't blame Horton, DC wouldn't make the details available, so the necessary deltas to the loom could be incorporated. It's no big deal, just take your time, RTFM and use a bit of common sense and it'll be okay.

Andrew.......

When I did my transmission cooler fans I found these people to be the cheapest for the SPAL fans. They have other options also. I think they're in L. A. At the SoCal TDR meet someone mentioned going to them for some work. They have a good reputation.

Might want to give them a call and see what they have.

Bob, I wait till I want to use the A/C, for me usually June - July. I've been fanless as warm as 85° with no problems but here in Montana there is very little stop and go traffic. When you're not moving a lot you'd probably want to put the fan back on when the temps are consistently hitting 70°.

I have a Horton Fan Clutch on my Truck. I modified the wiring harness and eliminated the 12V CTD specific connector's.

That's what I read in an older issue of the TDR as well. Scott Dalgliesh reported that the OE fan clutch when locked would require 25 HP to drive. I would be surprised if unlocked there was even a 4 HP loss... there hardly seems like there would be any parasitic loss there.

I am curious there is mention of the new 03 fan clutch being electric would there be any reason we could not change out to an 03 fan clutch?
