i have a 99ctd and 3 times when i have filled up the diesel fuel tank and started the pu, the fuel gauge reads empty, after turning the motor off maby 3 times the fuel gauge reads full as it is supposed to read, my question is,,,,, is there something wrong with the key switch or is there a relay in the fuse box that would cause this to happen. im not wanting to drop the tank and find out later that it was someyhing so simple .

I would lean towards the sender in the tank. I have had 3 fail in 547,000kms. If you turn the switch on and the gauge is on empty give the tank a thump with a plastic hammer or piece of wood if its stuck should jar it loose . Hope this helps.

The sender could have 'dead spots' where it electrically reads 'empty'. Mine's been doing that for years; one of these months I'll take it apart and fix it.

Yup. The fuel senders are junk on thes trucks. I've replaced mine once and have been living with another bad sender for 5 years now. Now I just use the trip meter to gauge the fuel and fill up at 600 miles when running empty and 450 miles when running loaded with the camper.
