Last week I noticed that my dash lights were acting funny. The ABS light, the Brake light and the Air Bag lights are all on. When I start the truck they often go out for a few seconds, but then they end up "on" again. The day after I noticed all this, my electric windows stopped going up and down. Once and while they will work, but most of the time they will not work. I bought a new 30 amp circuit breaker (top right corner of the panel) but that did not do the trick. (all fuses have been pulled and look OK) Anyone have any idea what is going on? I asked the dealer and they said it could take them quite a while to trace such a problem and at their shop rate I hate to let them look around with an open checkbook... mine! Someone at work said I may have a bad ground. Where is the ground on this truck? ('95 5 speed, 4X4, CC) I have taken the dash apart, but nothing seems out of whack there? Any help is greatly appreciated! Take care guys, Jeff in Ohio:(

Service manual?

Jeff,

If you don't have a Dodge service manual, NOW is the time to get one!!! There a many grounds on this truck and many many circuits to trace. So you have to find what is common to the things that are acting crazy (one particular ground?) and does not involve the other things. The savings in shop rate in this job alone will pay for it. Are any other things acting crazy that are on only when the ignition is on?

Just the things I've mentioned. Where do I get a service manual and approx. how much do they cost? That would probably be a very valuable tool in my tool box.

I've almost worn my service manual out. The cover had to be reglued. It was ordered the same time I ordered my truck. A gotahavit for sure!!! Anyway, you can mess up something just easter egging for the problem without the manual for a guide. It would be a bargain at twice the price! You will need a good meter too.

No, but I did try to unhook them and let them sit overnight to see if the computer would reset itself. That didn't work...

The circuit diagrams in the manual are a real pain to follow but one thing in common with the circuits you are having trouble with is the ignition switch. They all feed from the same set of contacts.

Was your truck involved in the recent recall on the ignition switch problem?

If so, the dealer was supposed to examine the switch and replace it if defective.

If they determined that it was OK, they put in a wiring harness and relay to take the heater fan load off the switch since it subjected the switch to too heavy a load current when it was turned to maximim speed. The heater blower motor is also fed from the same circuit as the other components you are having trouble with.

If the switch is bad, I would think they should replace it under warranty since it has already been the subject of recall.

A shorted or burned switch could not only interrupt the circuit it feeds but could also introduce an unwanted path to ground.

Best advice: Check with a dealer about possible switch problems and get the manual from Dodge.

For your immediate needs, Haynes puts out a pretty good manual with wiring diagrams that are easy to follow. You could probably get one of those at a good auto parts store. You can sometimes get copies of wiring diagrams and other information at your local library.

Good Luck!!!

Jeff,

Look just behind the fuse box under the hood. You will see a couple of places where wires ground to the fender, see if they are loose or corroded. Tighten them anyway.

Looking at the schematics this was a point in common I found that could be a problem.

By the way you can get the information regarding purchasing a shop manual from your local dealer. If I remember right, they're about $60. 00 (depending on your year)and well worth the money.

Good luck,

Tom
