Have a93 1TON 5. 9 CUMMINS that been eating up alternators@ battries. The alernator is only putting out 13 volt instead of 14. Whats the first thing to do correcting the problem ?

You think i/ve a bad ground eating up alternators on my 93. Being a novice mechanic i took it to the auto elec. shop and they talk me into putting a chrysler voltage regulator on It/s doing good chargin @ 14volt. Is that ok for long term? My tach hasn/t com back on.

Theres a sensor on/near the crank that goes to the computer , then from there it splits off in 2 directions , one for the tach & the other to the regulator in the computer , thats where the alt. regulator is , in the computer , so if you put in the external reg. with out fixing the problem , you may not get the tach to work .
I'm not happy with dodge doing it this way , a pain in the arss for everybody .
So does this mean that your tach wasn't working before ?
As for witch connections to clean / check , it would help to have a wiring diagram , look for all connections at batt. - fusible links , then body & computer grounds , the connector at crank sensor .

You can also take the more proactive stance and simply get yourself some GOOD QUALITY battery cable and run yourself 2 new grounds, one from the battery negative post to the block and the other to the body. Take the time and effort to sand the area on the body and block so you get a good high quality ground. To keep everything working right, both ends of the battery cable need to be shrink tubed, and quality copper lugs should be used.

LRose as JFaughn stated the Engine Speed Sensor is located over the vibration damber (a little over towards pasenger side). Follow wires upward to connector. Inspect connector for loose or bent pins then clean with contact cleaner. If that doesn't work you can check clearannce on engine speed sensor, you mite have to replace it.

The engine speed sensor (crank speed or crank position sensor on 24 valves)

send a signal to PCM for tach. PCM interprets, then sends signal to tach.

The engine speed sensor also turns on asd relay which sends line voltage to the EVR which is located in PCM.

The EVR takes line voltage and tempature readings from battery temp sensor (located under battery tray) to determine alternator voltage output.

Anyway that is how it works in 2nd generation 12 valves.

Our trucks work just a little different. There is no battery temp sensor. If our PCM does not see a signal from the crank sensor it will not send the signal to the tach and it will not turn on the charging system.

I think it also drops cruise control also.

Gap on the crank sensor is around . 050". Then check the wiring to it. There is a plug for it by #1 valve cover.
