Anybody else have their ETC light come on? Mine came on yesterday when I started it to leave work. Book says to get in as soon as possible for service so it looks like I am headed to the service shop sooner than I had anticipated. Anyone know if the 18-033-07 Rev B TSB reflash has anything to do with ETC issues? The book says that when the warning light starts flashing that there is the possibility of "reduced performance, an elevated/rough idle or engine stall and may require towing". Seems like I had read in another thread a while back about a reflash for these symptoms?

ETC light now off

I started up the truck this morning and the ETC light has now gone off and didn't come back on anytime during the 50 miles and half dozen stops that I just drove. I would assume that the ETC warning light can and does come on for anyone of several potential problems/issues... sure wish I had a way of reading the codes and finding out what they meant prior to taking it in for service. #@$%!

Yes I have. It is really the only problem I've had with my truck. You need to get the throttle control valve replaced. If the light came on it should have set a hard code. If you continue to run it, it will end up quitting on you. You are fortunate it set the light on the dash. Mine was intermittent and took a long time to find, it wouldn't set a code. I had mine replaced, it is under warranty, and have run over 5000 miles since with no problems.

Hi Terry,

Don't know if this applies, but someone posted in the last day or two, saying something about spending $50 on some reader type device.

Can't remember what thread it was in, and I don't know anything about how it is used.

(The post was by someone who said something about having data ("... and no, I won't post it. ") I believe the discussion may have been about EGT's.

I, too, dislike being in-the-dark about what is going on with these engines.

Found it,... post #58 in the "understanding regen" thread. ;)

My husband went to the auto parts store and bought something called an "OBD II. " It's a code reader that plugs into an outlet of some sort (I didn't look closely) under the panel below the steering wheel. It scans the computer and then flashes the code(s). Then you have to figure out what the code means (that's the hard part).

Hope that helps. He said it cost about $100.

Thanks EB, Wolfy and Janet. I changed the oil this afternoon and when I started the truck to check for any leaks the ETC light came on again. The next time I started a few minutes later it didn't come on. I was looking at the OBD II port there under the dash last weekend when I was installing the Brakesmart, it looks like the same one that's been being used for years.

I would think that the service manual would identify the codes but I don't have one yet, I am waiting on the CD version that includes the wiring schematics. Apparently the wiring schematics on the curent CD's don't work so I am being told.

I was told that you could also get the codes by putting the key in the ignition and turning it three times (without starting the vehicle) and the codes would flash on the odometer. This doesn't work on the MegaCab, for some reason. Tom bought that code reader a few weeks ago when the injection pump on my '99 2500 went bad.

We need the service manual, too.

Try the ignition thing... . I have had people tell me that trick doesn't work on the new trucks, but it works on mine and after the ETC light came on i came up with a P061A code..... Now just need to figure out what it means

Cycling the ignition to display the codes at the odometer doesn't work for me either. The ETC light hadn't came on again until yesterday and I think I see a pattern. If I start it and immediately turn the high idle on that's when it seems to do it. If I shut it down and re-start the light usually doesn't come back on. I haven't had a chance to get it in and looked at and quiet frankly I'm not looking forward to it anyway. I'm afraid if I take it in an it gets the rev. B re-flash I will end up with more problems... so for no regen problems or CEL's at about 4400 miles.

On the codes if you google it and type in dodge then the code it will pop up with information on what it is . that has worked in the past for me . hope that helps . Soon to be owner of a 08 :)

The ignition switch trick does not work for me either, I asked my technician and he said it does not work on the 6. 7 L engine on the Dodge Ram, not sure about the C&C. The ETC came on once and the scan by the Tech showed a MAP error, what ever that is. happened only once. Rev B is working just fine as far as the regen is concerned, it goes into active regen to often to suit me. I am having a Pyro guages installed to monitor the regen cycles, while they are at it also having a Boost Pressure and Transmission Temp guage installed as well. The only thing which would make me happier would be some what better MPG, currently running an average 19 MPG.

The technician is wrong. This trick works fine on my 6. 7L. I would be jumping up and down if I was getting 19. I got that one time on a trip but otherwise I run about 14. 5.

OK, if the ignition trick works, then please explain, very simply, and in complete detail how I can make it work, without any additional equipment.
I get 19 MPG by running on cruse control, having a feather foot and running empty (less than 500 lbs cargo) at 60 MPH. prior to 18-033-07 Rev A I was routinely getting 25 MPG, with the latest reflash the agressive regen has knocked the milage down considerably. I currently have almost 15,000 miles on the clock since new on June 02, 2007.

Set your odometer to trip, turn your key off and on three times, leaving it on the last time, a series of lines should replace your trip miles and after a number of seconds, 5 to 10, it will either say done or give you some codes.

I set the odometer to trip
I turned the key to on, three times leaving it in in the on position on the third.
I waited for 60 seconds. Still nothing.
There may be a difference in the trucks destined for Canada as they also have the metric functions,
OR I am not holding my tongue in the right position.

Don't know what to tell you. It works on my truck, although it is a cab and chassis. One more thing, make sure your door is shut. Maybe there is a difference on the trucks going to Canada, you can reset your overhead and mileage thing to miles rather than metric. Maybe that makes a difference, if not, I don't know.

The key for me was to make sure I cycled the ignition 3 times within 5 seconds. It would not work for me ever before I did that.
