I'm more interested in having an old vehicle that is "easily" repairable and resistant to EMP from solar flares or potential terrorist/wartime activities. Want to know more -- read (or listen to) "One second after"

I'm not worried about running from the cops -- and if i was, i wouldn't do it with a Cummins :)

Maybe you need a steam engine.

You can't assume that the starter or solenoid wouldn't be affected with out some testing. That would be tough to do. Buy a twelve valve truck and park on a hill. Doesnt take a real big hill to roll start in third gear A coat hanger can be used for the fuel relay and in the event of fallout it would be nice to have a vehicle that can burn corn oil or used engine oil, etc. I imagine gasoline would be hard to come by.

Working from 25-year-old memories from when I worked in that field... .

To EMP-proof a vehicle, you would need to enclose every wiring harness and every piece of electronics in a contiguous, unbroken metal shield.

It would probably be more cost-effective to install a gamma-ray detector and relays so that when gamma radiation (from a nuke explosion) is detected, all power is disconnected (switched from B+ on the batteries and alternator to ground (B-). If I recall correctly, EMP affects only powered-up circuitry. Again, IIRC, you have a few milliseconds (or tens of them) to power stuff down.

Of course, if you encounter an EMP strong enough to wreck your electronics, you'll probably have far worse problems to deal with soon enough.

The only time solar flares should ever be a problem is when the Earth's magnetic field is very greatly weakened or collapses entirely.

There is a lot of conflicting information out there regarding EMPs and its effects on vehicles. Sounds like the best thing to do is to do the best you can afford and hope for the best. Sounds like I'll be getting a 12 valve.

Emp will fry the entire electrical system, its basically a massive short. Fuses and filimants would blow, the fuel shut off would have to be mechanical to survive, and don't let the engine die after cause the starter wont work. With a manual trans and mechanica 4x4 yes you would be unstoppable, until they blow your tires.

Rherbert is correct thoug h it can't really be used without collateral damage. The emp will really be just a transmitter to derate and shut down the vehical. In essence it will be a direct form of onstar which already has at least some of those capabilities.

It is nice to know however that in the event of a wide spread emp blast our 12vtrail will keep us mobile while everyone else sits parked.
