I guess I couldn't find it but I thought you guys were saying that a lot of the VP 44 failures were because of the Heat that harms the circuit board on the pump - or did I get that wrong?

Now - can the pump be serviced and the electronics checked or do they need to be replaced?????????

HOW LONG can a VP 44 last????? I mean will they go 500-600,000 miles?????

Re: Vp44

The electronics can fail on a VP44 pump. The PSG (brain box) does fail sometimes. But there are other failures that occurs very regularly also. The diaphram inside the pump fails more often. Also the pump housing has had some failures along with the advance piston. Water contamination seems to also happen fairly often. Yes the pump can be serviced. I have not seen any go 500,000 miles. I have 150,000+ turns on my original VP-44 and it is still strong. I did install a FASS at about 40,000 and I ditched the VP fuel inlet banjo bolt in favor of a straight inlet connection that is 3/8 in diameter. Better flow volume which helps keep everthing cooler. I also run a 32 oz bottle of Power Service with each tank when I am traveling cross country. This is to protect me from unknown fuel stops. I should see 200,000 out of it without any problems. ;)

They can be serviced by a repair shop with a big $$$ test stand. The electronics has to be matched up with the mechanical bits while on the test stand.

So no user servicing unless you have access to the stand.

Install One?????????? I mean 1st time????????

How many bolts do you lose inside the frame rails? :D

Never done one yet, but based on pulling and reinstalling the PS/Vacuum pump (underneath the VP and harder to get at) I'd guess 3 hours tops.

First time? Give yourself 8 hours, make sure you have a 12" extension, a good 15mm socket, a 19mm (or 3/4) combination wrench, and angle wrench is nice to have, and if you have access to a matco or snap on guy, the 3/4 line wrench socket is VERY nice for pulling the lines off the back of the VP.

Take your time, it's pretty straightforward, don't drop the pump key or the lock washer in the gear case either...

Tools needed

19mm (3/4) wrenches

10mm socket

2 1/2" extension (for fuel line support brackets and grid heater)

12" extension

15mm socket

17mm wrench or socket (banjo bolts)

pump gear puller

assorted other wrenches and stuff help, as does a good magnet
