I almost hate to ask this but I need to know where this goes in my NV4500. The transmission is almost completely assembled and I have this extra part... Anyone know where it goes. My exploded diagram is of very poor quality and I can not find it on there for anything. It looks like an orange nylon ring about . 030" thick.

I had a whole toolbox drawer full of parts that I removed when I worked on airplanes that I couldn't figure out what to do with. As far as I know, none of them ever crashed.

You really don't want to hear this - I won't be making your day today :( . That would be one of the spacers between gears on the mainshaft. Somewhere around the house I have pictures of my trans torn apart (I layed the parts out in sequence and took pictures to make sure I got it back together the same way) but I can't find them right now otherwise I could tell you for sure where it goes. Looking at the service manual it looks like it goes between the 2nd gear snap ring and the third gear bearing. If that's the case you'll have to pull the 3-4 synchro hub back off the shaft, then pull the 3rd gear synchros, 3rd gear, the 3rd gear needle bearing, then install the spacer (there is a spacer there, but I'm not positive it's that one) and put it back together. In the service manual I can only find two spacers on the mainshaft - one is that one. The other one goes between the reverse gear bearing and first gear (it's a much thicker one, not like the orange fiber one you have). I'll keep looking for the pictures to be sure.

P. S. Did you read what I said in the other post about the end play?

Ok, I figured it out. There are two snap rings on the main shaft. Each snap ring has one of those orange spacer rings between it and the gear bearing that rides right next to it. The larger snap ring requires the thicker and larger in diameter orange ring. The smaller snap also requires one... (my extra part). I put it where it belongs.

About that end play... Assembling everything back together with the same shims that were in it originally, the lower cluster gear has maybe . 001 to . 002" end play. I didn't measure it but I worked at a machine shop long enough to estimate it. It is not snug where it will not move, but it barely moves...
