Launching boat by myself am dependent on Park to hold vehicle. Not good on park. I saw a post on this problem once but have gone back to the first of the year and am unable to find it. Seems like Emerg. brk. lever in drum was stuck. Anyone have solution or can give time, place of that post. thanks Bob

parking Brake

Bob have had problems with the actuating lever for the parking brake seized to the mounting stud. The other problem, assuming you have already checked for a leaky axle seal or wheel cylinder:eek:, could be that you rear brakes are out of adjustment, the automatic adjusters tend to be a bit sluggish in our trucks. To repair the first problem, the brakes have to be completely pulled apart, save for the wheel cylinder. Last year when I did a brake job on my truck, had to remove the stud at the top, that the actuating lever pivots on, and drive the stud out of the lever, it would not pivot at all, rusted solid!:( This is also a good time to replace the rear parking brake cables, while the brakes are apart.

If you find that you brake pedal is a touch low, this is an indication that the rear brakes require adjustment. Mine usualy need adjustment about 3 times per year.

Etobicoke

Thanks Neil: This is what I was looking for . No leaks and brks. are adjusted good, must be the actuating lever. Will get into that soon. Thanks again, I really need that parking brake. Bob

My emergency brakes kept hanging up about 3 years ago because they would not fully release. To fix it I pulled the axles and as Neil said cleaned everything up and used a small amount of anti seize at the pivot points and since then no more problems, but I do adjust them manually as required.

While this won't fix your current problem, once you get the brakes fixed, I recommend using them on a routine basis. I use mine just about every day. This will prevent them mechanism from rusting, and making the parking brakes unoperable when you do need them. Good luck.
