Hi Everyone,

My emergency brake pedal bracket broke. Before I was able to replace it, it was possible to lift the old pedal a little higher than it's released position and get the brake light on the dash to go out. After awhile the dash light stayed on no matter what I did. The broken brake pedal bracket has been replaced by a brand new one, but the brake light on the dash still will not go out. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Tom

If your brakes are working ok otherwise, I'd say it's in the switch. If you're having a mushy pedal, perhaps you have a vacuum leak. I also have to raise my pedal after releasing it, to get the light to go out.

I have noticed that these switches are prone to malfunction. I have both trucks currently in the disconnected mode. The copper spring acts as the contact. The switch is closed when the peddle is lowered and the spring/contact is placed into the open position with peddle fully raised. That copper spring is a joke.

If the park brake isn't in perfect register/adjustment, the darn thing won't work. I like to "customize" my park brake adjustment and therefore the switch ain't working.

If you don't know the peddle is engaged when you pulll away, you have no business driving. LOL... ... ... I don't need the lamp to tell me so.

Greenleaf,

It's not a question of the e-brake being engaged, it is a question regarding why the indicator light on the dash will not go out despite a new and to the best of my knowledge properly installed e-brake bracket. I just like things on my truck to work properly.

I'll look to see if the copper spring is missing or just out of place when the e-brake pedal is released.

tugboatphil, every time I see your sig. I can almost hear a foghorn! :D

It must have something to do with my Navy days.

Tom , you can use an ohmmeter to check continuity through the switch and make sure that it's making/braking. Chances are pretty good that the switch has given up the ghost.

On our trucks there are three things that cause the brake light to come on. 1) The parking brake is set, 2) There is a hydraulic pressure inbalance between the front & rear brake systems, 3) Low vacuum in the vacuum lines. Or problems with the associated wiring/vacuum lines for the above systems
