Well ,I took the 97 in for a emission test and failed. limit 30% opacity tested at 43%.went back the next day and failed again ,but it was 34.1%.What a ****ty ass test ,have never failed it. I guess I need to get a waiver to get my tabs, but can't find a certified AES SPECISLIST IN MY AREA ,Renton WA. DOES ANY BODY NO A PLACE IN WASHINGTON THAT IS AES CERTIFIED TO DO DIESELS .

Does your truck smoke a lot? Soot/ Black? I perform these tests and I’ve never seen results that high.
The limit is 30. % opacity , and I only failed it by 4.1 (34.1%).My truck does not smoke, only a little bit under load.So I failed it barely above the set stander .So I've no clue on what to do , in the state of Washington you can get a waiver by going to a Ecology authorized Emission Specialist ( AES) AND SPENDING $150 ON DIAGNOSIS/REPAIRS TO GET A WAVIER.

With all the smoke we have had the past couple weeks it would seem your truck would be cleaning the air when it runs. ;)

Here's a place I found on the web that is in Renton: http://kingstransmissions.com/renton-wa/4142849

And a Washington Vehicle Emission Check Program AES Search: http://www.emissiontestwa.com/e/AESSearch.aspx

If you snap your throttle in neutral (no load) and you don’t visibly see any smoke, there’s no way you’re blowing 34%. Is this a state run program? Can you go elsewhere? Can you put up a picture of the receipt printout? The meter is supposed to be calibrated daily with a filter. It should show this on the receipt.
One truck I recall testing often over the years is a old smoky pre emission Cat 3406, and that only blew like 20%. Something is not right there.

Yes this is a state run program. I have to stay in my county. I have attached the read out.

Wow NINE (!) snaps. And they did not give you a reciept of the actual test, only a bill showing some information. This also looks like a state run contracted business.
In some states, like New Jersey, you have a choice of going to the state facility for free, or having a certified shop do it for a fee. Do you have a similar choice?

In are state you pay $15 dollars ,and if you fail, the second test is free. I'LL have to see if WA lets you go to a certified shop. I talk to the mechanic at are shop, and he said was it up to temp. I did notice it was up and down on the gauge, 190 down to 150 and back up.so I think I'll change the thermostat to a 190. whats a go brand cummins , gates ,napa ,etc.

I’m still calling foul on that meter. If you don’t visibly see smoke on a snap, no way you’re 40%. A warmer engine might help. I put a Mopar stat in mine, it was a moto rad brand in a Mopar bag.
In NY we dip a probe in the engine oil dip tube. Minimum of 70*C for a valid test.

Last year here in AZ when I did the test, the testing people acted all confused. Lots of talking amongst themselves, right after my test and they handed me my failure report. Had it in my hand about two seconds and another tester ran over and grabbed it away from me. He started having words with the two other testers and after sometime another tester came over to me and asked me to back up and pull into the other lane to use another machine. I did and my truck passed. I asked what was the problem and the one guy said the machine was broken. You just can't trust these people or their machines. If the one person had not been watching I would have left with a failed truck, that should have passed.

Since retiring and Flagstaff is now the residence no emissions and 5 year registration. Life is good with that mess gone.

What thermostat and temp 180 or 190 are you guys using? cummins ,mopar ,etc .Has anyone used this one below?

Mishimoto High-Temperature Thermostat 94-98 5.9L Cummins

I am jealous, I grew up in Flagstaff but stuck in Phoenix now. I can deal with Phoenix emissions testing garbage, but I really miss those summers up north.

Well, I had to go to a diesel AES SPECIALIST FOR DIESEL.cost me $300 for some one to say and then print (Inspected the vehicle and found the vehicle has a Banks intake and K/N filter. The label is installed correct under the hood for the after market equipment. Can see soot on the tail pipe it's an indication of the catalyst could be failing. Valve adjustment and fuel filter is recommended to help for the issue). Went for the third test, fail it, they open the hood and got the waiver, so I could get tabs. What a pain in the a**.first year the truck has ever failed.

Arizona use to issue waivers if you took the vehicle to their lab. I use to do that yearly with the roadrunner (street hemi cam, headers) and the worked 340 Satellite. Later they changed the rules and only 1 waiver for the life of the vehicle which meant you could waiver the first year and fix it after that as no more waivers. I just left them parked until they reached antique stage and no emission test.

Dave

I ask if the waiver was only good one time, she said I could waive it again. Here in Washington, its ever other year you have to test it,so you always have a free year, plus not all counties need to be tested, if you have a place over the mountain no emission testing.
