(Well had to look up my info to post for this thread. As I usually don't post) I live very close to you. 4 or 5 years ago I went to get my 2001 3/4 ton with 24 valve (bought used in 2005) smogged to get lic tabs and the guy said to bring rpm's up to 3,000. I said no way and never asked to do that before and I asked him why 3,000 as that is way above what I should. He said that he was only following directions to do the test. He had me pull over to the side by office and I talked with manager. She was able to pull up every test my vehicle had in their system, going back to 2005. She looked at everything and found the problem. As it turns out Dodge also produced a gas engine that is the same cubic inch. On my registration under "power" the block had "G" which stands for gas. And she directed me to a state inspection station in order to change from "G" to "D" as in diesel. Sate patrol looked at all past smog tests and the label on door frame just below the latch and the vin number. Mashed a few things into their computer and gave me a piece of paper that basically said engine is OK and original engine size and smog stuff is OEM. Took that paper to lic place where I get tabs and lady changed "G" to "D" took my money for tabs and that was it. About 2 weeks later driving by the smog place I saw the lady out side by their door yacking on her phone. I pulled in and thanked her, she said very common for dealers doing paper work to put in wrong info. That wrong info then goes into the state data base and that is what prints out on your registration. Now I'm wondering if someone didn't mess up in my favor, which if they did I wont complain. As old neighbor had everything they owned regristred at his sisters house, which was out of the smog test area, so he could get out of smog test.

I'm wondering about others in our area, do others with our trucks get smogged? I thought being my power got changed to "D" no more smog test because of some change the state did 5 or 6 years ago.

So I don't know the answer thought I would chime in and see what I did. And for what is worth, went smog tests first came out the state said they could care less what is under the hood, only thing they care about was came out of exhaust pipe. Of course everybody knows that was a lie.

Well ,I took the 97 in for a emission test and failed. limit 30% opacity tested at 43%.went back the next day and failed again ,but it was 34.1%.What a ****ty ass test ,have never failed it. I guess I need to get a waiver to get my tabs, but can't find a certified AES SPECISLIST IN MY AREA ,Renton WA. DOES ANY BODY NO A PLACE IN WASHINGTON THAT IS AES CERTIFIED TO DO DIESELS .

Does your registration, in the "power" box have the right letter? As in "D" for diesel and not "G" for gas? I think mine was messed up when we got it and dealers licensing lady screwed up. I think when I see a 2nd gen I'll ask if they have to get smog test. I thought I was all through with them. After reading about yours, maybe not. Ya, how did that dealer treat you? My impression was they treated me like just another nameless face in the crowd. Being Cummins moved from Renton, I did by a couple things from them, and Not impressed.

I'm not sure what you mean by("power" box have the right letter), I look at my registration, their is no power spot, just the vin number, and mine decodes saying its a diesel. The emission testing depend on the county your truck is registered in ,not all counties require the test. I'm in King county which you have to test, till your vehicle reaches 25 years old, then no more emission test.Yes I felt like just another nameless face in the crowd, I had 8:00am appointment and didn't get out of their till after 4pm, but they were the closes AES DIESEL CERTIFIED place.

OK , my bust on registration that has "power type". I went and got all my info out of glove box and got all that the lady printed. Maybe the pink slip has the power box I'm talking about? I do remember the tester asking me what engine I have. And questioned me "oh 5.9" and then the guy said to raise rpm to 3,000 and when I questioned him and talked to his boss (the lady) she is the one that pointed out that the state had mine listed as a gas engine. My vin also decodes to diesel and have no idea how lady knew to send me to state patrol for inspection, then to lic place, so it was in system as diesel. But the test reports the lady printed for me shows "fuel type" as diesel and test results of "overall diesel snap results. But I can understand how a tester could plug in a vin number when you get tested, and if info wasn't put in right when first licensed the tester would try to make you do the wrong test. I'd look at my pink slip and see if the "power box" is where I saw the difference of G or D. But pink slip at safety deposit box. I do know I've have not need a test to get tabs since the lic place changed something in there computer. From on point of view I wonder if I've lucked out somehow and not being flagged for smog test. Last test was in 2014. And again I'm going to start asking people I see if they get smog tested. I know I'm in smog test area because wives car I still have to get tested.
The lady at smog place printed out "view test records" which showed 5 tests then printed them out which were titled "vehicle test history report". And after looking real good at those reports, they also have more info than what our registration has. Like trans type and exhaust. My last test was on 3/13/2014 with opacity reading of 3.3

You do know 5.9 can mean gas or diesel,I always say diesel if they ask.On the snap test, the range is from 2000 to 3000 RPM, just has to be some where between and if yours tested at opacity reading of 3.3, you'll have no problem passing .the limit is 30.
