Emission Testing

Hey, I got a problem, I just got my Juice and 4" exhaust with replacement pipe for the cat and am moving to Chattanooga, just my luck they started emissions testing. Newer diesels have to pass an OBD test, what exactly is this and will my Juice affect this test if I turn it to 0? And furthermore, I would like to get around being tested at all, no moral crap please, (save your fingers) I don't care, just help me if you can with any suggestions on evading testing and information on what these monkeys are going to do when they plug into my port. Normally an OBD test just queries the computer to see if there are any emission related codes. If there are none, you pass.



Are you sure you need the OBD test? Here in Ohio gassers get OBD, diesels get an opacity check only.

Chattanooga sucks man. I got on the website today and I have to pass both an obd test and a fuel tank cap test. On the phone today some monkey said they check for cats too! I'm wondering my truck is 04. 5, the 04's don't have cats, when they pull up my vin will it specify the half or not, what do you all think about this technicality, should I count on it and junk the kitty?

I wouldn't junk the cat. If these places are anything like Ohio, they're remarkably sophisticated. I'd bet they flunk you if you don't have any part you're supposed to have.



The fuel cap test is no big deal at all - don't sweat it.

You should not have any problems with the fuel cap or the tests run through monitoring the OBD port. There are no sensors that actually monitor the cats itself or its real effectiveness. Now if they do the visual inspection that they are suppose to do, you will have a problem.

New York (which is a CARB emissions state) has only a OBD test for gas powered vehicles and this includes hybrids. All Diesels over 5000# get smoked, commercial or not. At 7800#, I'm getting ready for an opacity test. Since there is no component monitoring, fuel feedback, or evaporative emmissions to watch in a diesel application, there is no use in looking at that OBDII port.

I myself am a NYS inspector and I do opacity tests all the time. I see some trucks (especially old detroits) that bellow smoke and they still pass. Unless you have some extreme box in there, I wouldn't worry a bit. The kitty might be another story.
