I know what the warranty states (Fed & Ca - from 5yr-8yr/50k-100K, very convoluted). What is the actual/observed life span of components in the emissions system listed below? There should be enough high mileage vehicles out there to get an estimate.

ERG (Exhaust Gas Recirc) valve

EGR cooler

CCC (Closed Coupled Catalyst)

NOx catalyst

DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter)

Which of these components, when degraded, will prevent the engine from functioning? Will it be the computer controls that prevent it from functioning?

It is odd to me that none of the warranties (Fed nor Ca) specifically mentions the DPF.

The egr cooler lasted 102,000 miles, developed an internal leak which caused the exhaust gas to blow all the water out of the engine. Needless to say it caused overheating problems.

The dpf lasted a little over 150,000 miles. I was told by the tech that the life expectation of the dpf was between 150 and 175,000 miles.

For the first time I'm going to admit this, I removed the dpf, the egr cooler and the egr valve and have not had a bit of problems since. I now have 221,000 plus miles on the truck. I no longer haul, so the miles have not been adding up like they used to. This will probably be my last truck. It should last me forever.

What's a dpf, egr cooler, and egr valve cost? When they fail and are not under warranty any more, that's when I would be thinking about not replacing them.

EB, how long ago did you pull your DPF?

I have had my stuff off for 40,000 miles and haven't had any trouble. (knocking on wood).

I got a new DPF at 65K and a new turbo at 89K. I would include the VGT as emissions equipment as the only reason we don't have an 'old style" turbo is emissions. I deleted the DPF 200 miles after it was replaced. In that 200 miles I still had a code for EGT sensor(s). My thinking is the EGT sensor was bad and that's what caused the DPF failure. With the foolers in place, I don't get the sensor code.

My truck loves running without the DPF. I had to reinstall everything to get the turbo replaced and haven't had a chance to get the EGR off again. I liked it much better w/o the EGR and cooler as well.

I have no worries about the 6. 7's longevity. Only the EPA mandated crap attached to it.

2Rowdy,

Do you have CELs or alarm bells?

When I first deleted everything I was using the edge to clear codes on start up. Took about 15 sec. before I could start the truck. I am now using the SMARTY and I start the truck in a normal fasion. I believe the SMARTY some how disables those codes in the programming. So Yes I am code free.

The XRT & Smarty are code free. No sims or other modification other than DPF/Cat/EGR delete w/ the EGR Cooler delete optional if you want to go all the way w/ it.

The easiest would be a DPF/EGR delete w/ keeping the EGR Cooler intacted along w/ the cat w/ a Smarty or XRT.

Is the Smarty or XRT a programmer?

Can one of the boxes you named be installed without tripping the new bootloader programming in the latest Cummins software that causes a non-start condition?

Yes, both are programmers and no at this time they cannot be used for a 2009+ w/ a bootloader software ECM. I'm guessing w/ time they will crack it, but who knows.

Personally my truck will stay stock unless I have continously problems that the dealership can't fix under warranty. Plus I live in Cali w/ smog testing starting next year and who knows what else they will have planned.

The mileage is far better than my old '08 Ford 6. 4 PSD, but slightly worse than my '05 Dodge CTD (by 2mpg). . My stock 2009 does pull better than the other two though.

Just from my reading, that the bootloader is not a flash. Only when you have to replace the ECM w/ a new one that comes w/ the software. Did you get a flash or did you get a new ECM w/ the new software? I'm kinda curious on that. I wonder if I bought a speedometer calibration only programmer for my bigger tires will affect anything. ?. ?

I believe the build date for the new 2009 trucks are for the effective bootloader ECM is on/after 3/4/09...

I pulled the dpf right after they told me it would cost $2200 to replace it. The egr cooler was replaced at no cost since they said my head gaskets were blown and replaced them instead of the egr cooler, which they did check, but it was still bad. Once it was replaced, the problem was solved. With the cooler gone, I won't have that problem again. I have no idea what the egr cooler and egr valve cost. Both are sealed up on a shelf in my shop. The dpf is back on my truck, gutted.

Round numbers, CAT $2000, NAC $2000, DPF $2000, Cooler $700, EGR $300, turbo $2000. About a year ago when we were cleaning and replacing all the parts and sensors the tab for warranty per truck was just short of $10,000. Those days are long gone with the new software. Newest flash levels are BE, AW, and AS.

I had a voluntary reflash done at my own request. My ECM, turbo, egr, dpf, etc. are all original and troublefree.

Is the end user of the vehicle legaly required to maintain the function of this stuff after their life span?
