Where the heck do I go and get this done??? I ain't got a clue about this. Do I need to take my comp box off or just leave it in the off position during the testing??? Any help or suggestions would be apreciated. Thanks in advance!!!

I went to 7355 Sheridan - west side. 426-4764 Emission Clinic. I don't know about the box - I guess leave it turned off. Call them first but don't give your name. I don't think something like that is part of the visual inspection. They didn't give me any trouble and there's not a seal left on my pump. Craig

Not exactly right down the street from ya but Colorado Diesel down in Castle Rock, same guys that have had a couple RMTDR meetings. Thay have always treated me right.

So ya know, a guy at work told me about a place down on Mississipi in Denver called Cartech Inc. Was quick in and out. Guy did not look under hood or underneath truck or anything. I drove it on to the machine. He put some device on the tailpipe, came back around and did the test sitting in the drivers seat. Took all of about 5 minutes. The cost was $45. 00 as I had a coupon the guy from work had gave me for $10. 00 off.

Emissions

I just went to The Emmission Clinic on 7355 Sheridan. Left my VA on and it passed no problem. In and out in 15-20 minutes. I like these guys the best so far. I'll be taking my '93 in next.

Colorado requires an emissions test on diesel engines? Wow! I thought California was bad.

How long has this been going on in Colorado?

Kevin,

I left the box off. The numbers on the sheet they gave me were not above 05 whatever that means. The guy was saying something about how low mine was and the level went up to 30 or 40 or something like that. I was gonna have him do it again with the comp box on but he said he was not comfortable doing that because my truck showed quite a bit more horsepower than he is used to seeing even with the box off. He had done a ford right before mine and siaid it was a POS compared to my truck. They guy really did not know much about diesel trucks and did not appear to be the sharpest tack in the bunch.

slo-ryde:

They have been doing them for years (15 or more). They used to just have a vehicle safety inspection. Then when Denvers air quality got bad they switched from the vehicle safety inspection to the emissions testing. Several years ago they instituted state run emission stations which put a strain on a lot of mom and pop shops that invested in the equipment to do it. But the state run ones don't do diesels or cars older than like 82 so then you have to go to one of the other ones. For diesels they only check for opacity. A car cost like 15 and a diesel cost 45 go figure. My gas truck when new had 4 year exemption from testing but when I got my diesel they only give you a 2 year exemption. It is also not statewide. I think it is just the greater Denver metro area and maybe Colorado Springs just to the south. Maybe 8-10 counties or so. And get this, if your vehicle fails and the repairs to get your vehicle in compliance cost more than a few hundred dollars you can get an exemption some sort of hardship rule. I guess I am not against the testing but I think they overcomplicated the process for sure. By the way Denver has just recently been removed from the dirty air city list so it must help some.

What is opacity? Do they run an optical test on the emissions to check soot levels?

I knew Denver had air quality problems for a long time. It sounds like the program must be working, even though it seems to be more complicated than need be.

I suppose the San Francisco bay area (where I live) will be doing emissions tests on diesels eventually. I'm hoping to retire and move out of the area before that happens.

BarryG, Thanks for the info!
