I just got my first mandatory emissions test in Coloardo for my 2004. It took 5minutes and cost $65. The results ar as follows.

Light duty vehicle dynamometer lug down test

60MPH 00% OPACITY

50MPH 00% OPACITY

40MPH 07% OPACITY

Zero Shift 00% OPACITY

Results Pass

Everything else passed. What does 07% OPACITY at 40 MPH mean?

I only have 25k miles on the truck with no after market items and the oil has been changed every 7,500 miles.

Here in Phoenix, we have to test, every year ($28. 00). They put a meter next to the exhaust pipe & have you run the engine up to redline & hold it for a number of seconds. I have to to this about ten times. There is no load on the engine, the truck is in neutral.

The meter measures the particles coming out of the exhaust pipe. I always pass & the truck is turned up.

BTW, my '91 W-250's plates were $23. 22. Cheaper than the test.

Maximum Opacity allowed is 40. 0%. This year, the '91 was 7%. It has been 39. 9%. I have done nothing to change anything but, the % varies by quite a bit.

I really think the emmissions testing is just a "money-maker" for the state. Another bad joke.

There is a lamp and receiver set up that measures the opacity of the exhaust under the varied loads.

You can fill your fuel filter with a variety of chemicals to reduce the opacity during the test.

We cleaned up an enhanced first gen from something like 30% down to about 7% iirc. Dropped an enhanced 2nd gen down to less than 2% in a snap idle test. Just by using an injection cleaner straight.
