I have an EMS hub kit coming for my '07,5. 9. I only have 19,000mi on the truck so am I going to have nightmare issues with removing the stock hubs? No road salt issues here in Calif. How are you guys using the power steering to remove the origional hub? Any other things to expect? I am thinking of reusing the origional front U-joints as the mileage is so low on my truck. Should I replace them also? If so with which brand? Thanks for any input.

My truck is over 5 yrs old with 150k miles and the hubs just tapped out like the manual says and the U joints left as good as new.

I can't speak for the '07, but on the 2nd gen, once you remove the all the brakes and axle nut (leave the tie-rods connected), take a long (6" or so) 1/2" extension and stick it between the frame and the back of the hub on the bolt heads (backed out about 1/2"). Have someone gently turn the steering wheel.

You will need to work it back and forth and the hub should pop out. On the 2nd gen trucks, if you are lucky, they will come out. If not, you will need to burn off the ball joints with a oxy torch, then beat the hubs out of the knuckle.

I just have read horror stories here about the removal of the hubs. I guess you only read about the PITA ones. The guys that have them pop right out really don't have anything to complain about.
You guys that have the EMS or Dynatrac set-up..... Are you seeing ANY better fuel mileage?

I picked up about one MPG. Then I installed a 220 lb Buckstop front bumper, and lost it. Aero?

I would still do them both again.

I don't have them yet (I'm hoping somebody will come out with a stub axle kit) but have read people reporting anywhere from 1-3 mpg increase.

I have tried searching and have not found the answer yet. But with the hub conversion, does the wms to wms change? If so how much? I have been reading between the hub conversions and the OEM bearing. I like to maintain my stuff. Besides all the trucks I have owned have had the full floating front end!

Hand calculated 1. 4 mpg increase with the Dynatrac kit on the same 104 mile mixed loop(55 mile winding mountain 2 lane, 50 miles freeway), trying to keep the same speeds and topping off at the same pump. Several days apart, but the weather was about the same. BTW, my truck's first 2 years were in Montana then another year in California before fitting the Dynatrac kit. No salt in Montana or California, hubs came right off.

This was a couple of years ago, I intend to re do it again once with the hubs locked and again unlocked... I'll post the results.

What is wms?

BTW the Dodge is still a full floating front end already.

I've used the Dynatraxx kit now for 80,000 mi. very pleased average about 1. 8 mpg better, and everything else has yet to show any wear... . I installed a solid kit on my friends truck was missing seals and a bearing other than that was a nice kit. For those asking the wheel ends up in the same position as with the stock hub asy, just the locking hub sticks out a bit. Any one have a link for the EMS parts site?????

You guys on the east coast aren't getting it, we don't need any special tools to remove the hubs out here. After you loosen the bolts you can practically pull the hubs off with your bare hands.

I received the EMS kit yesterday and am planning to get it installed in a week or so. Thanks for all the replies. I'll post some pics of the install and if it is a PITA or not.

Hub Removal

Hoping for your sake the removal is as easy as others are commenting, guess its a West Coast thing! In any case, if you had lived in the upper Midwest as I, you need to prepare for a bigger job, I just did u and ball joints @65K on my 06 3500 single rear and it turned into a week proj, special tools made, porter power press, etc. I do a fair amount of towing (Bobcat, boat, RV) and think in addition to the climate, the excessive heating from braking, etc doesn't help, in anycase the axle Dodge has now uses is a POS, adding manual lockouts is on my priority list, in addition to the joints noted, I've already replaced the Xfer case also, all the front end stuff spinning all the time foolish in my mind. I would rather add the Solid Axle kit but they seem to be out of the business for the time being? Good luck!
