Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Engine acting strange this morning

On my way to work this morning, engine acted strange this morning. Was just about to get off the interstate when my brakes felt more stiff, engine went to idle but did not shut down. After I pulled over (quickly!) I took it out of gear, let it idle for a few seconds, revved it in neutral to see if it would do anything, pumped the brakes and they were back to normal. Got back in the turn lane and didn't do it again.



My brake fluid is halfway between full and add, so I will add more, I will check my fuel pressure just to be safe.



If it does it again I will let you know!

On the 99's I'm not sure what brake assist you have, so it could be a vacuum or power steeing problem? What I did wantto mention though is, don't add brake fluid to top it off. The next time you have the front brakes done and the caliper pistons are pushed all the way back in, that fluid will overflow that tank. Have seen this happen alot. The brake fluid goes down as your pads wear and the pistons move out further. Just my $. 02.

Well my power steering pump leaks, and I know it is driven through the vacuum pump. However, even with my pump leaking fluid, to the point where the pump makes noise on tight turns, my engine has never acted like this. Could be the vacuum pump though.



If my calipers were sticking closed, even with my foot off the pedal, would the brakes feel stiff?

If you have the hydro assist, it works off the power steering pump and with the fluid leak ing out or being low all together, you might loose pressure to the hyrdo boost unit. It could have air in the system now. Does your power steering feel okay?
