68RFE Question

P0245

my 09 6.7 runs warmer running at highway speed 75 or so. gets up to 215 engine 180 trans. then it will run 198 eng and 165 trans the next day towing a boat. same temp outside hot as heck. then the next 10 times it runs warm again. i have replaced the cap the thermostat, fan clutch as well. i know the ecm tells the fan to come on but is there a way that i can check to see the clutch come on to see if the ecm is telling it to?

Mike,
What's normal for the truck? I had an 09 Ram 4500 and saw your high numbers normally on my truck. But I had a Smarty on level 5 AND when running GCW 33K Lbs, I didn't see much higher.

- Any performance upgrade?
- Any recent updates?
- Did the increase happen over time or just suddenly start?
- How many miles on truck?
- 190° thermostat?

Just helping understand all the facts.

Cheers, Ron

Man first off thanks for the reply. It has a smarty JR. TPS fuel programmer air intake. It has run fine with all this for years.has 173000miles. Than I blew a head gasket and had blow by. It all started when the head gasket blew. I had studs put in and a replaced the gasket. It runs warm at faster speeds or towing. Than one day pulling boat and hot outside I can hear the fan and runs 195 and 168 trans. The same evening it’s a little cooler and it runs 215 and 185 but can not hear the fan. I have checked the plug at the fan cleaned it with contact cleaner but no luck.

Mike,
You're welcome. Until a master mechanic comes on with better info/advice, recommend you start a log and document outside temps, load, and engine/transmission temps.

I'm just an informed owner, but thinking this is the new norm for the truck. Truck isn't running hot and pretty much in operating range of the truck. More knowledgeable folks MAY have different info.

i was doing more research on this and the ac high pressure switch turns the fan on as well. i was looking at the connector on it and noticed the wires seamed to be crimped for some reason. i re bent them and in a few minutes after idling the truck i heard the fan speeding up and down. so i will drive it and see. i will keep ya posted.

Great... So, increased temp likely increased load on engine without AC relay engaging fan clutch?

Good troubleshooting!

Cheers, Ron
