I thought I'd change these fluids one night this week, so I went down to pick up supplies. I could find no acceptable oil at the local Autozone. My owners manual says use CE or CE/SG with a sulfated ash content of less than 1. 85%. The Autozone computer recommended an SG rating.

I wanted to get oil for my 5 speed as well, my owners manual recommends SG or SG/CD, which is what the Autozone computer came up with. However they carried no oils with those ratings.

What do you guys use specifically? I was going to run a regular motor oil, and a synthetic trans oil.

Thanks,

Jeff

You should be able to find Shell Rotella T 15w-40 or Chevron Delo 400 15w-40 at Wal Mart, Costco, or Sams. These two are probably the most popular diesel oils. I personally like the Delo 400 slightly better because it seems to flow a little better in cold temps.

I'm not sure about the fluid for your manual transmission, but I believe lots of people use a good synthetic 5w-30 oil, assuming yours is the Getrag. I've read it's very helpful for the Getrag if you overfill it. Hopefully someone else with a Getrag will jump in with details.

Far as I am concerned, Shell Rotella is the only oil made. I run Rotella 15W-40W in everything from my pushmower to my antique tractors to my truck and everything in between. My dad has been a heavy equipment operator for over 30 years and he has saw a lot of mechanics service equipment. They all use Shell Rotella. He told me since I was a kid, if it is good enough for Caterpillar to put in a $250,000 piece of equipment, it was good enough for anything we own. Dad and I by it by the 55 gallon drum. You can get it at Pep Boys, Wal-Mart, farm stores, etc. For future reference, Auto Zone is the last place to go if you need anything for a CTD. Bill

Chevron Delo 400 15W40 is what I use in my CTD and my Peterbilt semi tractor with a C15 435 CAT- which is factory filled with Delo 400. Mobil 1 synthetic 5W30 engine oil for your Getrag. From what I've been told and was successful in doin was to overfill by one quart. I topped off transmission thru fill hole. Then removed top bolt of PTO cover on passenger side, and filled 1 more qt. The cap off a gear oil jug has a small enough hole to fit in PTO bolt hole, if fixed onto the hose your using to pump oil into transmission.

Thanks guys, it's just 4 miles up the 99 to Walmart and the station with the best price on fuel is right on the way as well. Kill two birds tomorrow evening.

PS the previous owners of my truck had been overfilling the trans by one quart. I intend to maintain that tradition. :D

quikshft - The Rotella 15W40 was recommended to me by a friend who works for a major construction company in town. They use it in all their diesel engines and he said they routinely get 10,000+ hours from the Cummins (not quite as much from the others, though;)).

I paid $6. 49 per gallon a couple days ago from the local Auto Zone - they have it, but it's not with the "regular" oils but near the gear lube (at least the way the stores around here are organized... . ;)). They only had a Fram filter for the CTD, so I went elsewhere and picked up a Fleetguard - that seems to be the most recommended brand from what I've read. :)

Definitely! If nobody nearby carries Fleetguard filters, the easiest thing is just to order them from Geno's Garage.

There are documented engine failures attributed to running Fram oil filters. A silicone sealant used inside the filter disintegrates and plugs up the piston cooling nozzles. Never use a Fram oil filter!

Wonderful... . there was a Fram on the truck when I bought it. :( I hope nothing came loose and plugged anything. Are there any signs/symptoms of a plugged nozzle?

I refuse to use Fram - any any other brand - that uses cardboard for vital parts. The sealant sounds like yet another reason to add to the list.....

I don't know what the symptoms might be, but my guess is that it would be immediately apparent that something isn't right with the engine.

Until you can change the filter, I would think you'd be okay with the Fram as long as you keep the rpms down.

I'm finally getting to my oil change... I understand that the Getrag 360 capacity is 3 1/2 quarts, correct? I'm not going to use the sight plug to measure the oil into the trans, I'll just get 4 1/2 quarts into it thru the top or where ever. Am I on the right track here?

getrag drain/fill

Not sure on the exact #of qts of oil in getrag I'd have to check my manual, someone else can fill in that blank. I used Mobil 1 synthetic 5W30, with a pump that has a tube to go into the qt of oil and siphon it out and then pump it thru the fill plug. Either way my routine for drain/fill of getrag was, drain fluid thru drain plug, let it drip for awhile, put plug back in. fill getrag thru fill plug til fluid runs out, put plug back in. Then from passenger side of getrag remove top bolt of pto cover. It will be a smaller hole than the fill plug hole. My pump tube didnt fit, I had 2 use the cap off a qt of gear oil fitted onto the siphon/pump tube. Fill the one extra qt thru here. I'm sure theres other ways and better equipment to use for this. But this worked real easy for me. Bill

Bill, thanks for the reply. I have 4 1/2 quarts in the transmission now. That amount actually filled even slightly above the top bolt of the PTO cover as it started to dribble out when I removed my fill hose.

Anyyow, I think I've got it now. I used Mobil 1 synthetic as well.
