Can I pull the engine and transmission out as one unit ? My 53 block has finally cracked so bad I am leaking a gallon of antifreeze every 100 miles . Also my fifth gear repair on the nv4500 has 56000 miles on it and it just blew up again I’m quite surprised it lasted as long as it did anyway i found another block that’s not a 53 so I’d like pull them out together if I can and replace the fifth gear and the synchros and swap the engine blocks

A guy I know who parts out Dodge/Cummins does it. He unbolts and lifts the cab first. I've never tried it. In my mind it is less trouble to drop the transmission and then pull the engine. Even with the radiator top brace removed it isn't an easy removal. A hint, if your AC is working and you don't want to discharge/recharge it you can swing the condenser forward like a gate and remove the pump and lay it on the frame. I've done it four times successfully on my truck. Once for a cam replacement and three engine replacements. Worked every time.

Yea just my engine hoist. Took a little bit of maneuvering it around to clear the crossmember. It’s a hassle either way you do it. With a lift I’d pull the trans and motor separately..

My first thought was "Man that is going to be one heavy ass thing to try to lift out as a unit". And my concern would be the hoist getting stuck in a small pothole or on something else while trying to maneuver the hoist then "kaboom" on the floor, or worse in the engine compartment, the whole thing goes. If you have an overhead "sky-hook" you'd be better off then move the truck away after everything is disconnected. If no sky-hook is available and your stuck using a typical hoist I'd drop the trans first and do from there. Never done a Cummins, but plenty of others, so just MHO here. Good luck.
