I have posted this before and didn't get much feedback, but I now have to make a decision.

I have a used 53 engine block that I replaced when I had the engine rebuilt, there is nothing wrong with it (no cracks) I just replaced it for the peace of mind. I need to know if I should just scrap it or if it would be worth trying to sell.

Any info would be greatly appreciated,

Cory

Cory - Some folks (Piers for instance) can scrutinize a 53 block's casting around the area that tends to crack and tell if it's a good or bad block. Signs of pitting indicate the block is prone to cracking. A nice smooth casting means it's probably ok. I'd have someone knowledgeable look at it. If it's a good block you should be able to sell it.

I would be interested in it for a reasonable price. What block did you replace it with? I would like to find an 01' (non 53) block. Let me know what your gonna do with it.

Selling an item that has a known history of a potentially disastrous outcome.

I didn't know you could sell ticking time bombs on Ebay..... :-laf

the one I got has 4 B C about 2 inches above and a little farther forward than where the 53 was it also has a single 3 a little above and farther back than the 53. I guess I really don't know what to call it

I understand that around '01 or '02 the crankshaft sensor went away and they went with a cam sensor. Some REALLY resourceful guys on the TDR were trying to get the early ECM to talk with the later model block and were having a heck of a time. IF IT WERE ME, and I needed a block, I would JUMP on a early 53 and take my chances. Even if 53's have problem’s associated with cracking there are a gazillion of them out there with NO problem.

Anybody know what this means, I thought they had numbers like the 53 and 56.

Last chance! anybody have an Idea what it is?

the way i understand it is that if u have a big number say 53 or 56 or whatever u have the said block however if u have a bunch of small little numbers where the 53 should be u might have a 53 or whatever block but its made in mexico (i think) and is better then the brazilian made blocks i could have it switched around but its one way or the other theres a link somewhere here on tdr to a site that knows about this but idk where it is anyways hope that helps

I don't think that it would be wise to put it in a truck but it sure would make a great generator. No twisting to damage the block... It would be a shame to throw it out but I sure wouldn't want it in my truck.
