Just wanted to ask all of you what is the best way to break-in a new motor? I have been driving it around lightly, and haven't really got on it at all. I have about 1000miles on it now and see that it has used about a 1qt to a 1. 5 qt. So I am wondering if I need to hook it to a trailer and load it a little to help the break in or just drive it some more with no load? If I don't load it will it be ok, just take longer for the rings to seat in?

Just a couple of question on your thoughts,

Thanks Snoxracer

The "classic" method is to load it up to break it in. However, Cummins' guidance specifically states that you don't have to load it, but if you don't it may take up to 20k miles to break in.

I didn't run mine under load until probably 50k miles or more. And I usually drive like your grandmother. I think it finally broke in between 35k and 40k. Just a theory.

I have 4500 miles on my new engine after a 53 block cracked. Cummins tech told me to run it hard for break in & tow with it immediately if possible or you will burn oil after 100k. The guy was surprised when I pulled up with a trailer behind my brothers truck... . dropped the trailer & hooked up the new engine for a maiden voyage break in. I haven't lost a drop of oil... . running great.

If you Treat it like a baby it will always run like baby. If you treat it HARD it will run hard and strong like a big rig. Drive like you stoled it. Have fun be safe
