Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) engine breather bottle

Has anyone come with a good replacement for the little black breather bottle. I think some engineer missplaced heir head one morning and their aspirin bottle.



I was thinking one of the those aftermarket overflow bottles would work better with a little rework.



Does the engine ever suck the contents of the bottle back in?

If you do a search on " breather bottle", you will come up with alot of reading. I removed mine, extended the hose down to the track bar and zip tied it to same. Unless you have a concrete driveway, this is a simple cure. What you don't want to do is to extend the hose a long distance, especially if you live where it gets below freezing. There is a chance that the line will freeze/clog and cause blow the engine seals.



The breather only blows, never sucks .

Thanks, for pointing me in the right direction. I still think there has to be a better way to vent the engine.



I thought about extending the hose down, or removing the bottle all together. I like to play in the mountains around Utah and I don't want to leave the residue there or my driveway.



It can get cold aroung here in the winter, so I thought the overflow bottle, insert a breather from a gas engine in the top and put a petcock on the bottom for easy draining.



Does anyone know why the stock breather hose is molded the way it is?

Dump the breather bottle. Extend the hose down and it should not make any noticeable mess. The upside down "J" shape of the hose is that way so it will drain back some by itself. I wouldn't restrict the breather any. The bottle gets the oil all over the front of the engine, eventually drips on ground, collects dirt around the balancer and could lead to seal failure on the balancer.

Get a 3/4 inch male/male barbed plastic fitting, a couple of clamps and some 3/4 tygon tubing to extend it down.

I replaced my breather bottle with one of those little red aluminum bottles intended for carrying your backpacking stove's fuel.



I found one that had an inside dimension that allowed for the hose to just be inserted in like the factory one. Then I drilled a few holes about 2/3 the way up to allow for venilation. Lastly I drilled a small hole in the bottom and installed a transmission drain plug.



Is this the end all solution? Doubt it, but it does do a pretty good job of containing the liquid, and to make matters even better it's a whole heck of a lot easier to drain at every oil change because I don't have to take it off.

I just extended the hose to the track bar and left the bottle off. Haven't noticed any oil on the driveway yet.

Mick, is that the stock bottle with some kind of filter wrapped around it? How often do you have to replace the filter stuff and what did you use? That looks like a heck of an idea, the filter would keep the oil from getting out and all over everything, but yet allow it to breathe.



The idea of a drain valve is a great one too!! I'm all for easier and less mess!

It is just a folded piece of cheesecloth that

I kinda' sucured with the one tie wrap. I've

never needed to empty it but all I have to do is

unscrew the cap (the hose is held in by another

tie wrap about 1/2" above the end of the hose, just inside the lid of the bottle) and then tilt

the bottle down to drain it.

You can't block the small breather holes but

the cheesecloth acts like a filter to catch the

oil mist. Haven't had to change it yet... .
