engine cleaner recommendation ?

Can anyone recommend an engine cleaner?

I know ya ain't 'spose to wash 'em, but my t'stat gasket sprung a leak and I have quite a mess to clean up.

I like Castrol Super Clean,since I started useing it I haven't used my pressure washer. The stuff is too easy,spray it on ,hose it off. Who told you not to wash your engine?I see no probem unless you do it at 10 below zero.

I'll second the simple green. It's cheap and works fine.

I used Greased Lightning on mine. I use the pressure washer after it sits a while. Only problem is the water in fuel light. I just disconnect it for a day or two, then it's fine. I do take the K&N filter off and attach a plastic ziploc bag on the turbo hose and clamp it down.
Gotta keep it clean.

Be careful with Greased Lightning! It is not for use on painted surfaces or on aluminum (stated on the label)!! Simple green gets my vote.

I agree on Simple Green. Washing the engine is no problem. Watch the pressure and watch where you spray. Don't do it when the engine is hot, let it sit for awhile. When the engine is dry, I hose it down with WD-40. Shines everything up and makes it easier to clean next time. I use it on the frame also.

Simple Green is as good as it gets. Just used it Sunday on the drivers side mat to get out some grease stains, worked perfect. I even spray the under carriage with it to keep the underneath looking good!! Regards Pete

Problem with simple green---Why??

After reading the suggestion for cleaning the engine with simple greem, I bought a quart spray bottle and one day after the truck had set overnight, in about 60 degree weather, I sprayed it all over with simple green; let it set for 10 min and hosed it off with garden hose and nozzle. Let it dry naturally, and the whole engine compatment where ever it was black was covered with a light whiteish residue---sort of like it had been sprinkled with white powder, wet down and allowed to dry. The truck had 7K miles at the time and was not very dirty, but was dusty because I had returned from a trip that included a couple hundred miles off pavement.

Any ideas what caused this result??

BTW, just returned from a 2300 mile trip towing an 11K fiver all but maybe a hundred miles of misc running around and for the total trip got 11. 68 mpg.

thank you for all the responses, I'll try the Simple Green this evening after the ambient cools to at least 90 degrees (that's about 10 pm).

for Illflem - I live in Phoenix, what does "below zero" mean ?

merryman, never seen the white residue from Simple green. Is the water in your area very hard or treated with alot of chlorine? try after you rinse the engine compartment to blow it out with your compressor to promote the drying. Regards Pete

We are on a well so no chemical additives, but our water does have iron and manganese, it has a large filter system, but some of the metals-minerals probably get through. Wonder if one of those someway reacts with something in the simple green. I will try again and try blow drying it.

at 1020 pm last night I Simply Green'd the Cummins and it's enclosure, let is sit whilst I consumed some Mexican koolaid, hosed it off, fired up the beast and voila

It's PURDY again !
