:mad: Hi Im new to TDR but have owned my Dodge diesel for 3 years, this is the first time in 3 years it has given me any problems. The truck is titled as a 2001 but is really a 2000. The problem is the the engine has a dead spot in some times when you are on the throttle and working it or trying to shift gears. It hit a dead spot foe only abought a sec or two and right back to running normal again, but for that second or two it blows out all kinds of black and some blue diesel smoke. I took it to the Dodge garage yesterday and the only thing they found was 1 fault code and it was a month old or like 225 turns of the key old, the code came up transfer pump out of range and they could not find out what it mens or anything, dose anybody here know what that means?

I want to put some up grades on the engine but Im a little worried now and really don't want to foul up my warranty

I put a new fuel filter on the other day and found nothing in the old one. :{

Lift Pump. Man oh man get a new one! 115 bucks VS 1200 to sometimes 4000. (Dealer :rolleyes: ) for an injection pump. Welcome To the TDR! Root arround using the search feature on lift pumps and you will soon see why it is a delema.

Geezzzzzzzz.....

What good is your warranty if the flippin dealer can't diagnose and help you?

Find another... .competent, dealer and have them do a pressure test on your lift pump. How stupid can these people be?????

Also, I'd be sure to get this resolved before any bombs that will void your warranty, just in case your injection pump may have already been compromised by a lousy lilft pump.

Sorry for the rant, and also, welcome to the TDR.

“Lift pump out of range” is a code set in the ECM when the current to the lift pump is not correct. This could mean that a short or open exists in the wiring to the lift pump. If this code came up 225 key starts ago and did not reoccur recently, I don’t think it is the cause of your problem. My guess is the ECM is losing the TPS connection and thinking the accelerator has been released. This may not set a code.

One thing I would try is disconnecting the connector on the ECM and making sure it is clean and dry. A little silicon dielectric grease before reinserting will help. The lift pump problem may be real but only a pressure measurement will tell for sure.

But the dealer should have the know-how to figure this out. :(

The "lift pump out of range" code is also present on most crankshaft (or in the case maybe a camshaft) position sensor failures. This sensor could also cause this stumble. How is your tach doing? Any strange stuff coming from the tachometer needle such as "dead" or bouncy??

Poor lift pump pressures or even a dead one shouldn't cause a "lift pump out of range" code. The ECM or PCM cannot electronically tell if a lift pump is bad. At least I'm pretty sure it cant. Thats why bad ones can go unnoticed.

There's a TSB reflash for intermittent stumble. The engine will cut out for a split second-that's it, no smoke. Maybe not the case here.

Good Luck with the dEALER.
