LAST WEEK I NOTICED A HOLE IN THE FRONT HOUSING ON MY 1994 2500. I TOOK THE TRUCK TO MY LOCAL REPAIR GARAGE AND I WAS TOLD THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE OLDER CUMMINS MOTORS. THE DOWL PIN IN THE CASE WALKS OUT AND FALLS INTO THE CAM AND OIL PUMP GEARS. I WAS TOLD I WAS ONE OF THE LUCKY ONES (MY BILL WAS 2500. 00) THE TRUCK NEXT TO MINE HAD A BILL OF 12,500. 00 THE PIN WENT INTO THE GEARS, THE MOTOR JUMPED TIME AND IT BLEW OUT THE MOTOR. I SPOKE TO CUMMINS AND WAS TOLD THIS IS NOT A COMMON PROBLEM, IT ONLY HAPPENS TO 1 TO 3% OF THE OLDER MOTORS. I AM WONDERING IF ANYONE ELSE HAD THIS PROBLEM? WHAT DID IT COST YOU TO REPAIR IT. DID YOU CONTACT CUMMINS AND WHAT DID THEY TELL YOU?

We Call it KDP

There is a hole bunch of info on it, some have fixed it two different way some haven't, I fixed mine using the tab method but the pin had not moved at all so I was lucky and now I don't even think about it.

Thanks for the info, guys. Sorry about the caps. This is turbo's dad, he just made me aware that caps are considered shouting on the internet.

Keep the info coming.

This thread actually belongs in the 2nd Gen, 12 valve forum. The moderator will probably move it. That's where most of the KDP info is found. Also the debate about how to apply the fix that prevents it. :D

Welcome aboard "turbo's dad"!;)

Joe,

I thought this was for all 12 valves. Are you saying it isn't a problem on the first gens? I hope you are right!

Stan

paccool,

Don't think you first gens are excluded from the fun! I replaced a gear case on a first gen a few months ago. The pin took out a 2 inch section of the case.

Stan,

I think I have heard of 1st gen problems. Cord just confirmed that. Not nearly as many as the 2nd gen 12 valve. As I said above most of the info about it is here.

Dowel Pin Damage.

I had my gear case replaced this last summer on my 92. In my opinion DC should step up and start paying for this or paying for a portion of the amount like 50%.

I talked to the morons at the dealership and they just looked at me like I was stupid or something but what can you expect from a 5 Star Stealer.

They can't even change the oil in my truck without spilling oil all over or over filling. The last time I had the oil changed I asked them to make sure it was not over filled so they put 11 qts on work order but it was still over filled. They must think the general public is stupid.

I doubt if DC will ever own up to the Dowel Pin issue, they can't even put oil in a truck to the proper level. So goes life.

Jim

Just got home from a short trip and checked the site.

I may be in trouble here- every time we discuss something like this it seems within a month or so that the problem crops up on my truck.

Hope it doesn't this time!!!!

I've heard it may be a problem on some of the earlier model 24s but haven't heard of any cases... yet. Didn't hear much about on 12 valves till a little over a year ago though.

Welcome back Turbonatr!

Yup, the dowel pins are a PITA. Guess I'll have to do mine before it does itself.

How's the GN running?

I see you got out of NJ.
