Need serious help! Was coming back from the w/e yesterday pulling the loaded car trailer when 90-minutes into the trip while climbing a short grade @ approx. 70mph (outdoor temp 95F, engine temp ~185F, pre-turbo exhaust ~1000, fuel pressure 9psi) when the engine just died! Coast over the hill and down the other side to an exit ramp... where the truk will not restart!

Lift pump runs ~13psi.

Filter canister full... fuel at the injection pump line in.

Fuel system relay seems ok... swap w/ another does not change situation.

If I crack open a hard line to an injector... no fuel!

Have finished dragging the dead carcass home... what's the ailment? what should I look at next?

Thanks in advance.

Do some leg work...

Post on here... I am not sure of the place, but you can get a new VP44 for $750 here in Texas. find a reputable diesel shop in your area for the install if you don't want to tackle it yourself. You can save a bunch of money over the $3000. Install is easy and many on here have done it themselves... probably no more than 4 hours.

I think I remember reading that those $700. 00+ pumps are remans and carry no guarantee that they will work?? I may be way off but there is a thread on that

The cost of the pump doesn't bother me as much as the labor does... if you're saying it can be done in ~4-hours it feels like I'm getting hosed... I think I need to ask some rather pointed questions of the Cummins shop.

Thanks for the input.

I have had it done...

and here are my details. The truck ran fine, but exhibited the hard start when warm symptom. I took it to a ruputable diesel shop (they don't work cheap, but we have always gotten what we paid for). They tested the pump, and it showed to be bad; there were no codes in the ECM to indicate it was bad.

The pump cost $1550 for brand new pump.

Shipping for the pump was $50.

I had the valves adjusted while it was there and the new pump installed. Total bill was $2200. I had not heard of the new pumps for $750 when mine went south earlier this summer or I would have saved $750.

The main point is: It won't be cheap, but you can beat the $3000. If it is under warranty, let the dealer do it. If it is not under warranty or the pump wire has been tapped, take it to a reputable shop and get it done cheaper.

FYI... the install time of the new pump start to finish was under 4 hours. There is no concern about timing the VP44 like other pumps. There is a key way in the pump shaft for the drive gear. Each key is unique to each pump.

$750 VP 44

cumminsstuff.com, thats where you can get a $750 new vp 44. Spoke to him on tuesday, he said he should have 2002 pumps by yesterday, he is thinking about raising the price to $850. He has bosch dealers calling him to get pumps!!! Seems like a nice guy over the phone, looks like I'll be getting one next couple of days, I'll post on it when I get mine.

yeah, your right. I didn't have a chance to put an update but there is a 250 dollar core charge. At that rate you could buy the new pump and not worry about the core and still be cheaper than most places.

I tried cumminsstuff.com and couldn't find the website. Tried a couple of different spellings... . anyone have any luck finding it?
