My 99 24-valve suddenly lost all power and dropped to an idle while running at normal speed. Once at idle the power cam back with the Check Engine Light on. The light reset after about 5 restarts of the engine.

This is the second time in two weeks this has happened.

What can cause this? I did not know of the procedure to capture the codes (Key On-Off three times) while the light was on. Can the codes be captured after the light has gone off?

Thanks for any advice

While I am no help with codes, my 2000 started doing the same thing. Crusing down the road all of a sudden the tach went to zero, the engine light came on and a huge power loss. Soon after it would go back to normal. I replaced the cranckshaft position sensor and it solved the problem.

I went to AutoZone and usaed the scanner to read the codes

P0121 TPS Throttle Positon Sensor

So, I will pull the connector and clean the contacts with CRC contact cleaner and wait before spending 450$ to replace the part.

Thanks for your help guys

If you do have to replace it, go to Cummins or some other bir rig shop for the part. Much cheaper than the dealer.
