Well, since I'm stymied on doing the KDP until next weekend, I think I'll do a disable switch. Especially after see another stolen rig thread. So I have a question. According to the pics in the recent issue of TDR where Joe is installing a disable switch there is suppose to be a connector by the brake on the 89 where you put the switch. I looked and there is not one on my 97 in the same location.

However, there is a green connector mounted on the metal bracket under the clutch with wires running to a sleeve which surrounds the clutch activation rod. Is this the right place? Seems intuitively obvious--BUT I hate to do a stupid thing. Unfortunately I gave away the 98 12v shop manual and Chiltons when I sold my 98--yeesh!

Second ?. The engine identification number tab is missing off the timing cover on the 97. Is there an alternate location for a engine i. d. # ?

I've crawl all over and here is some #s I've scrounged up:

* Oil pan: 3925772

* Underneath the drivers side of the intake manifold or head, I forget now, sort of behind the P7100: 3253925400

* On the drivers side of the block there are the following in vertical format, versus horizontally, 3924606USA and then T4 below the USA

Are these useful and can anyone decipher the code? The engine ID will help when ordering parts (I've already encoutered that problem). Plus, the FUD gremlins have me convinced this is really an engine swapped out of an 89 with 777 miles on it and stuffed into a wrecked 97. :eek: :-laf Actually, based on the wiring, hoses, harnesses, and etc. it doesn't look like the engine has been out of the truck.

Clutch switch

I believe that is the clutch interlock switch you are seeing. It should have a 2 wire connector that you can pull apart and then the truck won't start. That is where you want to wire in your mystery switch. I can look up the wire colors for you when I get home tonight if you need them. Ken Irwin

Well done my boy--Amazing it actually works

So I drove to town and picked up a switch. After considering a push button, I settled on a short toggle. Hit the thrift stores, ate at Bubbas (loves the pulled pork meal :) ), checked out the touri (man, I'm glad my daughters don't dress like that :eek: ), and headed home to do the deed.

Took me about forty five minutes including a bunch of wandering back and forth to remember where I put the loctite, do I have any heat shrink tubes, now where did I lay that switch down, and etc. (gets tougher the older I gets). :rolleyes: I soldered and taped the splices. The nice thing about the 97s is you undo two screws, three connectors, and you can do the deed outside the rig instead of scrunched up under the dash. Pics below. Now if everybody does this, pretty soon the creeps will have it figured out. :eek:

Had some time left over so I swapped the phatty 255 85x16 out for the winter set of 235 80x17 to see how they will run. The 255 had a spacer and still were mighty close together for my liking.

The bummer for the day was I noticed I have sprung a major leak in the passenger side axle seal. Just started leaking today. Oh, well... . no rest for the wicked. :-laf

So now do you just have to flip the switch to sart or flip the switch AND push in the clutch pedal to start? Looks like a worthwhile project.

The main reason I put it on is so when I'm at trailheads, especially in foreign countries like UT or CO, or in a dangeroos city like Wamsutter I can toggle it to off and no start. Otherwise I'd leave it on. ;)

So on and depress the clutch will start. Off and depress the clutch no start. Oh, oh... . why are you asking :eek: :-laf

If it is necessary to find the S/N just take it to a cummins dealer and let them hook it up to the computer. It will give you more info than you ever needed to know.

For example in addition to the S/N, it will give total fuel used, hours idleing, highest speed vehicle was driven plus a host of other bits of interest.

Traildog;

with your switch visible with a little looking, can be found. If parking in these remote areas, pull a couple relays and take them with you as added insurance, like the fuel and starter pieces. Do a search for anti theft devises and see what others have done. I have a double back up on mine. If interested send me a PM for that info. I wont describe it on the forum, to many on lookers.

I have a kill switch wired into the fuel shutoff but my switch is hidden so that you have to push in strange places before you can throw it. Anyway it cannot be seen no matter how much you look under the dash or behind the seat or under it. Some thieves think they are on a "mission" and are very persistent.

I had a perfectly restored '54 Chebby truck stolen in 1991. Never saw it again. It had custom Arrow turn signals cut into the rear tread-plate bumper. If anybody has ever seen that truck let me know!!

Not a 97, no computer to hook a reader to.

Oh, no reason. :-laf

Really, just wanted to determine if it was possible to start up while in gear. I determined yesterday that a thief with knowledge of the truck could easily bypass a disable switch to the fuel shut-off solenoid.
