Removing Muffler

first diesel

To all,

The info has been great. Sorry I haven't answered sooner. Today here in Canada the Truck Trader comes out. I'm on my way to buy one now. The info about the company that makes bench seat's for the 93 and older trucks is great! I have lot's of time and will take my time to find the right truck for me. So keep that info coming. What is the stock exhaust size? Should I look for a 4" or am I just wasting money?

Rick... ... .

If you use 3" or 3. 5" mandrel bent exhaust you "should be good" to around 300 HP in terms of no problems with restriction.

I have run a 3. 5" system for some years now and had no worries.

In hindsight I would/will look for a 4" system to replace it with now that mine has developed its first little hole were the chrome tip is welded to the tailpipe.

The big trick to the 4" is that on the 4X4 trucks, its a real booger to get it around the crossmember without it touching/rattling.

In my case there is barely 1/2" between the existing piping and the frame/cross-member.

Were is it that you are looking for a truck to buy??

Are you in my area??

Exhaust Pipe Size

Rick - The first gens had what I call crimp bent pipe and needs to be upgraded. If you look at the bend that goes up and over the rear axle you will see that it is wrinkled so bad that it obviously obstructs flow. If you don't see any dents/wrinkles then it's probably not stock - I went with the 3" (or was it 3. 5") mandrel bent kit from Banks - There are lots of options now.

Bank's Exhaust

I have looked at the Banks system on their website. Look's like a great setup. Kenndy Diesel offers a nice system too. It will cost more $$$ than the Banks. Tomorrow the Truck Trader will be out (Thursday) and I will continue to search. Igot my TDR book in the mail the other day. Good stuff about the manifolds cracking. This is what I need to know the little things that could be wrong with an older truck. They will add up fast when I have to repair them. Any thing else any one can offer is great. From looking around for a truck, they seem to be in short supply. The guy's that have them don't want to sell them. Or they don't have the right combination for me. Extened cab, 5 Speed, 4x4.

all of the cummins guys (in columbus, indiana) from the plant that come into my shop say the engine should see 800-1M miles before rebuild with consistent oil changes inside of 5000 miles...

rdurham,

there is a company in the valley that can hook you up with nice aftermarket seats. It's were I got mine.

Also I know of a newer 1st gen that is owned by a DC diesel mechanic here in Maple Ridge.

He has done the NV4500 transmission conversion, has probably $5000 in NEW spare parts and is selling it. I don't know if its sold yet but I can hook you guys up if you're interested.

He has driven it to work every day, and used it around his hobby farm to haul hay and horses and stuff.

I also have a brand new front bench seat in the basement for a 93 that is in immaculate condition. Its a split front bench.

Truck for sale

Is this truck a 4x4, 5 speed, extended cab, 3/4 ton, long box?:D And the guy would sell it to me for next to nothing because I'm ugly, my leg's are thin and I can't dance. ;)

Rick... .

I'VE GOT A 95 CLUB CAB, WHICH IS THE FIRST YEAR OF THE SECOND GENERATION TO HAVE A BACK SEAT THAT CAN HANDLE THREE ADULTS, ALTHOUGH IT IS MORE COMFORTABLE WITH TWO IN THE BACK SEAT. IF YOU CAN FEEL COMFORTABLE WITH THE STICK, IT IS BY FAR THE BEST WAY TO GO,LESS PROBLEMS,(SHEARED TORQUE-CONVERTER,ETC. ) MORE MPG.
