Just a FYI report on the 98, dusted ring, project truck. Little Bro and I got the engine out today. First time I've ever pulled a engine without removing the hood first. Last night I welded up a lift bar with a hook on one end and a loop on the other. Worked OK with my little 1 ton porta-crane, I used the lift points on the head. However on the install, I'll utilize the front lift eye, and a couple of 12mm bolts (not head bolts) and hook up about #3 or 4 cylinder for the rear attachment point. We almost had a serious issue with clearance at the rear due to the lift bar hitting the cowl above #6.
No big deal pulling the engine without removing the trans first. I did find that the torque converter only had 4 bolts to the flex plate, should have had 6.
The transmission had a Mopar Parts sticker on it with a build date of; 336 02.
What's up with that date, anyone know?
This afternoon I pressure washed everything, welded up a set of legs for the engine and bolted them on. Tomorrow I drop the pan, pull the head and see what I've got to work with.
One last kinda funny. I've got a little tractor, a 50hp Massy Ferguson 253. When I hooked the engine up to the end of a long boom pole to carry it outside for cleaning, the front wheels of the Massy started clearing the floor.
I had to re-hook to the center of the boom in order to keep the frontend down.
