It's a long story but here is the short version. After many trips to the dealer, parts replaced and fearing the second buyback under the lemon law the engine knock is gone. Dealers' kept pushing me away after the third attempt to fix all saying it's a fuel knock or nothing can be done. I tried 5 bottles of Delo injector cleaner with slight improvement but knock would return on the next untreated tank of fuel.

I started a case file with Chrysler and got a number for Cummins from the customer service agent. The Cummins rep talked to some mechanics and called my back reporting the knock most likely being caused by newer low sulfur fuels with little lubricity and suggested a good fuel additive(non-cleaning. )

It took about 1,000mi using a fuel additive and running it hard. I have lived with this DAMM knock for over a year and can't believe it is actually gone. Oo. Thank you Cummins.

So if it was fuel related, it was not really a defect? So why would DC repurchase it anyway?

I didn't design the engine or refine the fuel

Maybe because it should be capable of running on the fuel that is available today. Water and contamination aside, I don't feel I should have to spend extra money per tankful of already overpriced fuel to put additive in so my injectors don't shyt the bed. That is BOGUS.

TF- You're not complaining that you're having to take EXPENSIVE diesel fuel, and then add bottles of concentrated dollars to that already expensive fuel, just to make the truck run as advertised? Yah, me too!

JK- I'm glad you finally got your sanity back. Did the smart thing and went to the source!!! I'll bet you have the cleanest injectors on the planet. I guess its going to get worse in 2007! Fleetguard has a fuel filter with lubricity nodules that will disolve in use. Might consider asking them about the FS-20000 system. (You will need to get an adapter for the "chemical" filter- FG has them). Will save you from tipping bottles and playing Dr. Chemist every time you fill up. Thats the way I'm going next filter change. . unless bad news starts knocking under the hood before then.

SAG- remember when our GREAT STATE decided to "clean" the diesel fuel back around '89(?) by lowering Sulphur (withoug telling anyone) and almost wiped out the OTR trucking industry? Every truck repair facility along I-5 had trucks backed out to the street with hoods open, waiting for injection pumps.

There really, no there should REALLY be some Quality Control Standards on our diesel fuel to keep this "stuff" from happening.

You should read the seafoam thread. A couple of guys have had good luck with one can of seafoam in the fuel filter canister and then putting two cans in the gas tank. I'm getting a BG injector service done by a local dealership. they are sending a rep. and a tech from BG products to do this service for the common engine knock problem I will let you know how it works.

Well said.

Engine Knock?

JKibby,

Thanks for the info. I have had an ongoing injector problem, also. Mine has a "knock" or "rattle" between idle & about 1400 rpms. It sounds like one of the injectors is not doing the "pilot injection" thing & just shooting the entire load of fuel into the combustion chamber, at once. It sounds like one cylinder on a pre-third gen. engine ('89-'02 engines).

I've been using Flying J fuel, here in Phoenix, AZ. for almost all of my fueling. For, at least 6 months now, I've been using Primrose 405 fuel additive that has some lubricity in it along with cetane improver & other conditioners. BTW, a good portion of the fuel we get, here in AZ, is the CA ULSD.

I've had my truck into the dealer numerous times for this problem. The Service Mgr. & one of his writers heard the "knock" & acknowledged it. But, DC requires THEIR set of tests before they will acknowledge the problem & do something about it. The things they test for show no problem. Obviously, they are not testing for the actual problem I'm experiencing.

I, recently called DC with my complaint & they gave me a "claim number" & I now have to go back to the dealer. I believe they will have the "Area Service Rep" take a look at it & do further testing.

Did yours, and others trucks have the same symptoms, as mine?

If so, I wonder if the Stanadyne Lubricity Formula might be a good product to use. It has a lot more lubricity than their Performance Formula & Performance Junior. Three to five times the lubricity, I've heard. And it's cheaper & will treat about twice the amount of fuel.

Thanks for sharing your experience with this problem. Maybe, were getting a little closer to solving this problem.

I forgot to mention that the knock went away for a couple of weeks after a trip with my trailer to the High Desert Diesel Round-up, in Palmdale, CA.

There may be something to running the truck hard. I've heard that doing so will keep the carbon build-up off the injectors. Although, I've pulled pretty hard, w/trailer, here in AZ climbing over 8000' in 230 miles with some steep grades & it didn't make any difference.

However, the problem went away, temporarily, after the CA trip. Really only pulled hard on a short portion of the trip in a hilly area right off the freeway going to Palmdale. Driving on the freeways in CA you can only do 55 mph. ,w/trailer. I was doing about 60 mph.

Quality (Ha!) Dodge in Utah and factory rep blames the driver.

Got to drive it like you stole it! Towing hard and fast over a good mountain pass will help also. I am still using Diesel Kleen from walmart in the grey bottle. PITA.

Thats kind of a B. S. answer. I find that after a long tow with my 10,000lb fiver my truck knocks worse for awhile.

I don't know if it is the best product but I used Rolling Big Power's (RBP) fuel additive.

I told you it is a long story but again but to make it short the truck might be purchased back for two reasons mainly because the truck is pushing thirty days in the shop and on it's fourth attemp to fix the knock problem after replacing a high injection pump gear and a reflash. Also, the hydro boost exploded while my wife was driving with my two childern and narrowly avoided causing a catastrophic accident. My wife and children had a higher power looking after them that day!

It sounds like Doubleclutch and buffalo have had the same experience with the dealers. Yes, I am thankful to have my sanity back over the knock issue. :D
