My 2002 HO just developed a knock in addition to the normal rattle. It started the morning going on the freeway. :eek:It sounds like the old solid lifter engines did when arm was loose. It doesn't get louder only faster as I step on the accelerator. All the pressures are normal. :) Does anyone have an idea. It does not sound like it is a rod. Thanks Harry

How many miles, how has it been maintained, has it been modified? If so, how and what?

How does it run? Normal, smooth, or rough like a valve not opening?

EGT gauge? What temps has it run.

Provide some descriptive information and someone here will probably diagnose it or suggest how you can.

250,000 Mi. It has been mai ntained on a regular bases, it was serviced last Saterday with oil and filter, it has a smarty on 3, AFE air box, it runs great, EGTs around 500, water in normal range, oil pressure normal. It idals normal. Harry Westfall

Amsoil dual-Bypass with Amsoil changed last Saterday. I amoing to do the valves tomarrow. They want $800. to tear it apart to find out what is wrong at the local Dodge Dealer Thanks for the feedback Harry

check and torque all the clamps for the fuel lines from the rail to the head. especially #4#5#6 (the blue plastic clamps) they do come loose and make a ticking noise.

Also take a tube and hold it at the engine-and hunt for the spot where the noise is. this helps to isolate it.

I would find another dealer as a starting point. A skilled diesel tech would not begin immediately by tearing the engine down. There are simple checks a skilled mechanic can begin with before deciding the engine must be disassembled. Disabling one injector at a time might reveal a useful clue and a good tech would be able to listen to the sound it is making and the frequency of occurrence and diagnose it.

EGTs that never run above 500* only indicate a bad pyro or gauge or installed in the wrong location.

We did the valves, they needed adjusted the click went down then right back like before. Thinking about pulling the push rods and checking them and the rocker arms next. Harry

UP DATE - They finally found it yesterday. No. 5 piston is scuffed & rocking in the cylinder. I have no idea why the highest I run it is 1200 Degrees on the Pyromiter.

Thanks all for the input HWestfall

Yuck! Since they have it apart, make sure they check the piston cooling nozzles that shoot oil under the piston for cooling. It may be plugged or missing. How do the other pistons/cylinders look?

OUCH!! Well, I've seen them do it pretty regular on the HPCR engines, as it seems #6 doesn't get enough air, runs hot, and the piston ring breaks. I'd bet yours has done the same..... If it's ever had a K&N filter, a hole in an air filter, or something in the intake tube at start up, it goes right to the pistons... Dang the luck, man. I have seen some of the 12 valves with galled wristpins, which makes the piston cock in stroke, which over time, galls the cyliner wall, breaks a ring, and hammers the piston. All of them had one thing in common..... the driver's didn't give them adequate time to cool off. They just ran 'em hard and shut 'em down as they coasted to a stop!! Not saying that's what you do, just saying it's what we think happened to these trucks.....
