#@$%! Engine lite, p0500, p1693,p0253,p0216. Check engine lite came on this morning under heavy acceleration . Using comp with wire tapped, 5" exhaust, K&N filter, 56,000 miles. 3 questions:

(1) What does this mean?

(2) Does anyone make a software/hardware kit that I can use on a laptop to check and clear these codes?

(3) Is there something going really bad wrong or about to die?

Autozone can read and clear the codes for free. Otherwise you need an OBDII scanner. The codes will go away on their own after a while if the condition has gone away (x number of starts - don't remember what x is).

In your case don't think they will go away - your VP will though. ;)

I have a 02 also. 0216 is timing error in the VP44. Generally VP44 on the way out. Happens on a lot of 02's I think. I have a thread about fuel temp, my take.

Ok, bit the bullet today and ordered the Hot Rod VP44 that will be installed by "Power By Poole" in Salisbury,NC. He is also going to install a full gage set (pyro, boost, and fuel PSI). For those in NC area, this guy is good. He also installed my Con OFE clutch from South Bend Clutch. $2,600 for everything installed, which I think is a good price considering the quality work.

Make sure you have your Comp grounded very well also, I was getting the 0253 code and it turned out to be the ground for my Comp. I grounded it directly to my battery and haven't gotten the code in about 60,000 miles.

I also have "thrown a couple codes". Did the electronic Odometer read the codes, got a "P PCU" "P1693", followed by "P EUU" P0216". I read that that code means "fuel Injection Pump Timing Failure".

Truck is an '01 24 valve, 1 ton 4 w d dually extended cab, 3:55 gears, automatic, 69K.

(I am new to membership, joined after reading a response in "Trailer Life Magazine" from another member "John Holmes)(Also say above, "new rookie, fresh meat", in case my "etiquete" is not correct! Spank me later, help me now... please?)

Anyway, the actual performance problem: started about 2000 miles ago, only noticed on highway cruising. All of a sudden, dead throttle, no response, very short period, almost not noticable. Maybe coincidence, occured 1st time after I had to buy fuel on I90 in New York State TWICE at pumps I wouldn't touch, unless no choice. That trip, had some REALLY tough "cold start" problems in Vermont, maybe 15 degrees, truck ran like a gasser over-choked till warmed. Assumed bad fuel, changed filters etc etc. Seemed to run fine then came back.

When it dies, put your foot in it, it probably comes back and goes like hell. Can go several hundred miles no apparant problem, then maybe does it 5 time in a 20 mile interstate run.

Just ran 200 miles Sunday through the mountains of North-

west PA, down some muddy 4 wheel only access roads, ran like a raped ape, up to 16. 5 MPG with newly added Edge Comp box.

(I say "up to" that MPG because I expected higher MPG on 3:55 gears, running empty. flat running, 70 MPH on I 90, no headwind, best I did was 15mpg. I swear, two years ago, down in south Carolina that I hit 20 mpg, but I got a bad memory... )

Also, Edge box has made no difference to my dead pedal, comes and goes same before as after.

When it "dies", it feels as if you turned the key off, and when it catches back, it is as if you turned the key back on.

Is this a Bad Injection Pump? ( I assume a "VP44" in other references is "injection pump"?)

Bad Transfer Pump? (again, I see "pusher pump, lift pump etc etc, my assumption is these all describe what the book calls "transfer pump"?)

Has original style transfer pump still on side of engine, has not apparantly been changed over to in tank transfer pump,..... yet... . don't know if orignal injection pump, bought the truck used at 49K two years ago.....

I would appreciate any theories????

Also, Hey "Jet Pilot", from phone number I assum you are in Harrisburg PA area? I will be in Harrisburg on business Wednesday and Thursday this week... ...

When my truck through the 216 code, VP went one month later. 216 is electrical portion of VP44, slower death. When you see whiter smoke, its near death.

The VP44 pumps on both of these trucks are bad. Doug at Performance Diesel Warehouse and also Olie at Power by Poole are great guys that know what they are doing. Call them as they are our dealers out that way. Thanks

I think a lot of 02 VP44's fail in a disproportion to the number of trucks. Same pump, but I think the environment under the hood, mount in relation to the block, PS / Vacuum pump, higher HP, something that causes a temperature problem is in the design of the 02's.

I am experimenting with keeping the VP44 cool during engine run and AFTER shutdown as an way to extend its longevity. (https://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/showthread.php?t=135952)

BUT, I think there is definitely something DIFFERENT about the 02's.

What do some of the VP44 rebuilders think? Do y'all see a disproportionent number of 02's with bad VP44's?

Bob Weis

Brett Williams: I am really new and green, I think you were responding to me, BBridgeman with the injection pump probably ready to poop-da-bed? (Again, I assume a "VP44" is the injection pump)

The two places and people you say to call, got numbers? Or tell me how to look 'em up online?

I have a feeling this is NOT a "shade tree mechanic" fix in the garage?

Any idea ball park on parts prices? New, rebuilt, go for an upgrade 'cause you are in for a penny in for a pound?

(I have heard thru a friend of a friend of a local who rebuilds these, claims the first symptom is "lower than expected fuel mileage"... which again at 15 mpg hi-way, empty, flat, 3:55 gears, I think I "got the symptoms"... . ) Which also brings up, if you can trust the rebuilder, do you buy these rebuilt?

I am SUCH a needy guy, HUH?

Thanks for listening, any one out there. "... at least I ain't alone in my misory"... and I paid too much for mine used, but it wasn't a flood job!!! And other than "the rust on front doors", KOOL RIDE. BB

BBridgeman,

Hi,

Doug @ Performance Diesel Warehouse would be me... . If you want/need to discuss your pump options please give me a call at 717-557-7060. You can also look here to get an idea of your pump options and pricing.

Doug: You 'Da Ma'an. Like I said, I will be in Hairyburg tomorrow afternoon / Thursday all day on business, I can't rightly recall, but "Hummelstown" ain't across the state from Hairyburg, if I can do a drive by I will, but I be headin down for a major spankin from the boss, been a bad boy budget-wise, might just do the calls from the pike "cummin" and goin, 'cause the free time might need some bud-lite to get over the spankin from "dad"..... I appreciate the advice,

my vp just went out, 2002 6 speed 60000 miles. Whats up with the 2002? I installed a pusher pump at 20000, that sure didnt work. This month I have bought 4 new tires , rear u-joints. I bought this truck to work not sit in a damn garage. piece of s
