Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) engine miss/ buck

Buddy has a 1997 2500 4x4. Driving when the revs get up to 2K or higher sometimes it will miss, like it cuts out. Does worse with load or pulling hill. Any ideas? Where to start first. Thanks in advance.

Filter

I would run with a good name brand filter, or one from the dealership. I know if you got 24 valves the fuel filter is an almost must every 2-3 oil change. It would be the first and easiest thing to check first. It makes sense that its a harder miss when your pulling a load, pullin more fuel. Check fuel filter. Make sure you got a good fuel running through it when you do it.

I had the same problem in a 94. I found that the water in fuel detector was damaged. Try opening the bleeder valve and push the prime button a couple of times. I my case I noticed fuel leaking out of the bottom (only when the bleeder valve was open). I believe that under heavy demand this could have been possible way for air to get in the filter, thus causing the engine to miss and cut out.

By the bleeder valve do you mean the fuel drain or the little screw in the top of the filter housing or... ? Thanks. I had also wondered about the heater?

the fuel filter on the 94 is different than the fuel filter on a 97. a 94 is a screw on type filter. 97 the filter is in a canister. the wif sensor/drain on the 94-96 screws onto the bottom. the wif sensor/drain on the 97 screws into the canister.

have the timing checked, at a respectable diesel mechanic, 80% of 12V's the pump timing slips as soon as they drive off of the lot, stock timing is 12. 5*, they run the best at 17* but personally the difference between 15. 5* and 17* isn't worth the mileage difference. at 80k mine had slipped to 10*, wouldn't rev past 2000 rpm, raising the timing will make the truck run like a whole new truck, great difference in power... .

Changed the fuel filter & all seems well again!? Hope thats all it was!!!!
