Problems with Geno's Billet Fuel Filter Cap

Did the Seafoam thing a couple times. No change. Darn thing ran on Seafoam just like it's regular #2. Ran a couple other injector cleaners. They maybe help for a little while, but the prob is so hit and miss it's hard to tell.

Last Fri I went to the dealer and had them hook it up to the scanner and we went for a ride. Couldn't make it miss with or without the Juice. First test runs were with Juice completely unhooked.

Service manager ran a few tests, most interesting to me was the "injector performance test". He said they've seen a lot lower #'s than mine and that mine really don't indicate a problem. For those that know anything about the test, the largest spread was #4 cyl @ 87% and #5 cyl @ 116%. We ran the test 3 times and those #'s were only that far off one time. The other times it was more like 97% and 103%. Service manager didn't seen to think #4 has a problem.

What do you think?

I ran the truck hard tonight and it almost bucked out of it's shoes with Juice on level 2 once. I turned the Juice off for a little while and it was more normal. Turned Juice back on later and everything was fine.

I had either the 18-007-04 or 18-037-04, don't remember which off hand. That was a long time ago tho.

Obviosly didn't cure your issue but did you notice it help at all ?

I have been dealing with a similiar hesitation, miss, stuble whatever you want to call it. My latest trip to the dealer ended with the TSB 18-007-04 flash (which seamed to have spread the stubble more across the rpm range vs prior to was most noticeable around 1900 rpm) and was told to drive it until it broke , throws a code or a check engine light so they would have something to chase. Makes sense right, basically we can't find what's wrong so what until it breaks and then we will be able to tell ya  .

Do you thnk it could be anything in the drivetrain?

i had a very similar sounding problem after runnin EZ for about 30k miles... ... changed pressure valve and injectors..... finally took it to the dealer... ... they called cummins and ran some very specific tests and came up with fuel control actuator... ... had it changed under the 100k engine warranty and i've had no problems at all for the last few thousand miles... ... might want to look into this... . good luck... .

The re-flash did nothing for me. I think what I brought it in for was a rough sound/miss above XXXX rpm. Don't remember that it fixed any thing. The rough running might just have been "one of those things". That was probably 80K or so ago so I really don't remember.

Mine's been going on for too long to be driveline related. With what I tow, it'd be broke or wore out a long time ago.

CBradford, we ran all sorts of tests. Do you have any idea which one specifically. I'll ask about that actuator.

I mentioned it to my local mechanic when he did my annual inspection yesterday. Right off the bat he says, "you've got an injector going bad. " That's kinda what I've thought all along. I'm probably going to schedule it and have someone swap #4 with another one and see what the tests show. I've read in a lot of other threads about sometimes the injectors are just loose. Who knows?

Have a friend whos 03 at 140k started missing low speed, sometimes would lug on hot restart, stall and on restart run ok. Had a engine SURGE on cold start and at times hot restart. Anyway he NEVER had used a fuel additive. He tried dumping all kinds of additives(all brand names)and in large amounts in it. WHILE additive was in the tank would run fine. If he went a tank without additive it went back to same deal. Even a NORMAL amount of Power Service or what not it ran ok. Only additive that DID NOT help was LUCAS. Long and short of it he put about 6k on it that way(90%towing) and he traded it on a 06. (still running poor if no additive in fuel)

My friends truck had a problem he refused to get it lookedt. He never used any additives until it started all the surging and what not. He thought water etc. in fuel but the additive was lubing something I guess. If he skipped using it for a tank or tank and a qtr it started same issues again. I think a bad overflow valve or fica etc.

I have a similar problem or maybe even the exact same problem and my truck is at the dealer right now. The service guy said it was probably a bad air filter and I wanted to laugh. I have changed fuel and air filters and doesn't seem to matter. Just wanted to know if Cattletrkr has heard anything yet???

Will tell them about the fuel control actuator and see what they say.

I've got a couple phone #'s for a couple of supposed guru's that I need to find the time to sit down and talk to. One is Inject Tech the other Diesel Specialties. Both in Iowa oddly enough.

Ran fine today. Go figure.

Dealer SM called Cummins today and talked to somebody who thought highly of himself. He (guy from Cummins) said it is NOT an injector. That would do it all the time. He's leaning towards an intake issue. Since I've got an aftermarket intake, I could be sucking the tube together and temporarily closing off the air supply. Ummm... ... not a chance. I've got the factory elbows and the STEEL PIPE that is replacing the silencer ain't about to suck in on itself. That, and the boost gauge doesn't hardly move when it the engine bucks.

Anyways, the truck is back as close to stock as I can get it. Factory airbox... minus a few circular pieces (14 of them) and the TAG III is on the shelf next to the Juice. I'll run it tomorrow like this and see what happens.

I might reinstall the Rokktech sensor to see if timing makes it happen more. Stock for now though.

Other ideas the SM and I have come up with as possibilities:

-siple something or another---some sensor for something, he's not sure about my truck 'cause it's usually a problem with TC in/out and I don't have a TC.

-TPS or APPS or whatever they call it now

-Baro pres... who knows... weather seems to have an effect. I swear everytime the weather changes it's going to be a bad day.

Gotta post before lightening cuts me off. More tomorrow.

My truck is at the dealer. They finally got it to act up yesterday and I havent heard anything from them yet but as soon as I do I will let you know something. Did they check the fuel actuator for you Cattletrkr?? If they don't find anything wrong then I am going to ask them if they checked mine.

Dealer called and said they have found the problem. Falty lift pump. Said it is full of crap that was in the tank. SM said there is all kinds of crap in my tank including little bit of metal. So they are taking my full tank of diesel off and draining, cleaning, and blowing the lines out. He said it is covered under warranty but labor would be 3 hrs. Had them adjust the valves while it was in. I have 88,000 miles. Will let you know if this fixes the problem.

I've got an 05' with the juice which was put on at 20,000 miles. After about 5,000 miles of running (25,000 miles) with the juice it starting to miss or surge at low RPM's. I now have 52,000 miles on it and it still misses at low RPM's. I have just dealt with it because it only surges if you are going slow. So I'm very interested if you ever find the fix. Good Luck!!!

After going back to stock form last night, it ran perfectly all day today. It's had good days like this before so I'm not thinking it's "fixed". I won't be able to do much more testing until next week.

I must have gotten the metal through a truck stop or local gas station. I hardly ever fill up anywhere besides a major truck stop. I also try to use diesel treatment every other tank. I have not been able to drive it enough to tell if it is fixed or not because my mom had a hysterectomy on tuesday and so I have been at the hospital everynight after I get off of work. As soon as I take a longer road trip I will post again and let everyone know if that is what fixed it. I do have a 100 gallon tank in the back and i am going to put an inline fuel filter between it and my stock tank to filter the fuel even more.
