Today my 96 started running rough, missing, and dying at stops (auto trans). The truck would only restart if given partial throttle and still run rough. It would, however rev all the way up, sputtering all the way. I got where I was going and let it sit for a couple hours before attempting to make the 1 mile trip home and she fired right up and ran great all the way home. When the truck was missing there was a loud ticking noise which seemed to come from the injector lines or pump area.

The truck has done this to me one time before, but it cleared right up after it died one time. The weather had been extremely cold last week and now today it was over 60, and the truck had very little fuel in the tank. Could it have been a small bit of moisture in the fuel, or does it sound like I have a bigger problem?

Help, what do I need to do before this happens again and I get stranded or worse... like damage my fuel system?

Thanks

If it only does it when fuel level is low, may be a problem in the pickup tube area. Put some fuel in it and try it. Don't fill it up in case you have to drop the tank.

You may have an air leak. Email me at -- email address removed -- for my 12 valve fuel supply system write up, how it works and how to fix it.

update

So I bought a overflow valve and replaced it today. The truck seems to be running well and definitely starts up quicker. I havent driven it too much today, just around town a little, but tomorrow I will put some miles on it and we will see. I took the overflow valve apart that came out of it, and didnt notice anything wrong with it.

Thanks to everybody for their help, membership to the TDR is the best $35 I've ever spent!

The heat from the injection pump diesel through the valve weakens the spring and opens at a lower pressure after awhile not allowing the injection pump to build and hold the proper pressure. Some times you can streach the spring a little to . 55" I believe and it will last a little longer.
